When planning a getaway, most of us focus on packing lists and navigating endless luggage restrictions – but what you wear on the flight can be just as important.

According to fashion and celebrity stylist Lara Grayson, your travel outfit can significantly impact your comfort, wellness and overall flying experience.

From restrictive jeans to painful footwear, certain wardrobe choices can turn a smooth journey into a struggle.

On the flip side, breathable fabrics, relaxed silhouettes, and supportive shoes can make all the difference.

Lara shares the clothing, shoes, beauty essentials, and accessories she avoids when flying – and the 19 alternatives she recommends instead.

Whether you’re jetting off for a city break or a long-haul adventure this summer, here’s what to skip and what to wear for your most comfortable flight yet.

Celebrity stylist Lara Grayson reveals the clothing, shoes, beauty essentials, and accessories to avoid when flying - and the 19 alternatives she recommends instead

Jeans

Instead wear: Light, airy, comfortable trousers

For Lara, jeans are are a ‘big no-no’ when travelling on planes as they can be uncomfortable and restricting.

She adds: ‘Being a stylist I have trouble finding a pair I absolutely love and don’t feel completely restricted in.

‘I know jeans are a staple for a lot of people’s wardrobe but for a flight I would stay well clear of them, who wants to have a button digging into them for the duration of a flight while sitting down and trying to get comfy.’

Instead of jeans, she recommends lightweight linen or light, linen or cotton trousers with a stretch waistband, as well as tracksuit bottoms and a matching zip-up top.

Mint Velvet Blue Plisse Wide Leg Trousers

Lightweight with a touch of texture, these plissé trousers offer a modern take on airport chic. The high-rise waist and relaxed wide leg feel elevated while remaining ultra-comfortable. Made from 100% recycled polyester.

Jumpsuits

Instead wear: Barrel leg trousers and t-shirt

Lara says: ‘I would say jumpsuits are also a definite no for a flight if you’re like me and go to the toilet a lot you don’t want to be in the cubicle fighting for your life with your all-in-one.

‘Go for a barrel leg trouser and oversized t-shirt which is still comfy and cool. I love these ones from Tu at Sainsburys.’

Tu Barrel Leg Trousers

Heels

Instead wear: Flats, sandals or slip-on shoes

Shoes are a very important part of planning your travel look – and, for Lara, heels are best worn once the plane has touched down on the tarmac.

She adds: ‘The ballet flat is still trending and has become a staple in my wardrobe for everyday not just for my traveling days. They are so lightweight and not bulky so can easily still work with your holiday wardrobe.

‘If that’s really not for you then go for a slip on or sandal if traveling in the summer months. Top tip is that I always put a pair of socks in my hand luggage incase my feet get cold during the flight.’

Statement jewellery

Instead wear: Simple necklace or studs

Lara admits to wearing ‘a lot of jewellery,’ but for flights, she keeps chunky, statement pieces zipped up in her luggage.

She advises: ‘Avoid bangles or big statement necklaces as well as oversized and heavy earrings.

‘Instead opt for a more minimal jewellery look, with a simple chain necklace and some small hoops or studs, and save the statement pieces for when you reach your holiday destination.’

Heavy make-up

Instead wear: Moisturiser and lip balm

According to Lara, wearing heavy make-up has the potential to dry out your skin.

She adds: ‘I would always carry some skincare products in my hand luggage so I can have a bit of a pamper on the plane, including a face mask and an intense moisturiser; oh and don’t forget a lip balm or oil.’

Underwire bras

Instead wear: Non-wired support

Lara said: ‘For flight mode you don’t necessarily want your underwear causing you to be uncomfortable.

‘If you do still need support opt for a non underwire that still has support, Lemonade Dolls has some great options for bigger busted ladies, as well as this one from Bravissimo.’

Bravissimo Lillie Bra Blush Pink

Claw hairclips

Instead wear: Soft scrunchies

Claw hairclips are all the range this year – but Lara warns to reconsider wearing them especially on long-haul flights.

She says: ‘Who needs something digging into their scalp whilst sitting down for a long period of time? Not ideal.

‘Instead go for a soft silk scrunchie as they are super soft and won’t cause kinks in your hair. if you prefer your whole hair out or your face a headband would be a good idea also, great if your planning to do a full on skincare routine also.’

For those who want an effortless, fresh blow-dry look when they step off the plane, she advises putting in hair rollers for instant volume during the flight.

Alternatively, heatless curlers can give a soft, salon look when you land.

REHAB Silk Heatless Curler

Keep your style intact on the go with this mulberry silk curler set. Just wrap damp hair before your flight and arrive with effortless waves – no heat or damage.
