At 61, I think my generation has refused to grow up. I mean, I am getting older, but I’m wearing exactly the same things that my daughters are, who are in their thirties – as well as people in their twenties.
Style doesn’t suddenly stop because you are older – although I do think I have to personally be a little bit more careful at my age.
What used to be funny – doing granny chic – is not funny anymore, because I am someone’s grandmother.
Now I just have to be a bit more rock and roll all the time. That edge is important to me, having something a little bit undone like the khaki fringe knit top which is a really fun piece, or the brown puff sleeve babydoll dress.

What I love about this George collection is that it understands women want fashion to be joyful, but wearable too.
The striped two-piece could easily be mistaken for an Isabel Marant two-piece – I could take that away with me on holiday but also walk down the street in London in them.
The dresses have just the right amount of weight, so nothing’s too see-through, but it’s still light and breathable. These are the kind of dresses to live in.
The earthy palette of the collection means it’s quite seasonless, which I think is very clever because I get really put off by summer clothes.
It’s not that I don’t like bright colours sometimes – I do – but I like collections that can move through the year with you.
There are pieces I’ll happily wear through autumn, like this khaki jacket, which is probably my favourite piece from the whole collection, that pairs with the trousers in the same shade. They’re cinched in at the ankle so they’re not too billowy and boho.
I have to wear glasses now because of my eyesight, and once I accepted that, I started to realise they’re actually really useful – not least because they stop you frowning all the time.
Glasses and sunglasses add this extra layer of mystique and coolness they can completely change the attitude of an outfit.

You can throw on the simplest thing, like an old t-shirt or a black vest, and suddenly with the right sunglasses it feels intentional and chic.
I’ve always loved accessories for that reason. Even though I have the tiniest ear lobes on the planet, I love a statement earring or a good gold hoop.
I’d honestly say to people: break your virginity and go and shop at George, just go and shop in a supermarket.
They’ll realise they’ve still got the same head on. I think supermarket fashion has genuinely changed.
You can see all the collections are becoming cooler now. It’s not just, ‘here’s a white T-shirt.’
You’ve got studded bags, little funky moments, details that feel considered. You’re not going there just for knickers and vests – although, by the way, I love knickers and vests. Who doesn’t love vests? I live in them.
But the point is you should be able to have fun. This is a really truly affordable treat.
Fashion has always mattered to me because I think it’s actually not a luxury, it’s a need to express yourself if you have no other way to express yourself. How you dress, what earrings you desire on that day.

Even if you’re just putting on a grubby old T-shirt – you still choose which one. That’s a form of expression. It’s joyful, or at least it should be.
And finding things that work for you is difficult now because there’s so much noise and so much choice.
I think don’t spend too much time looking at other people. That can become a rabbit hole, when you start comparing yourself and trying to look like someone else.
I think I actually did that myself until recently, and it’s taken me the past year to realise that really wasn’t me.
Undoubtedly, whatever I put on, there’s always going to be somebody who thinks I look like a complete idiot. Once you realise that, and you’re happy with that, there’s really no problem.
