Ex-Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp believes his old side could now ‘be favourites to go down’.
Redknapp, 79, was Spurs boss between 2008 and 2012 and is fondly remembered for his time in charge by supporters.
Following the abject 3-1 defeat at home against Crystal Palace on Thursday night, Redknapp phoned in on talkSPORT to give his assessment, with the club plummeting towards the relegation zone, now just one point above it.
He said: ‘It was another disaster, I mean four or five weeks ago I couldn’t really see Tottenham being involved in a relegation scrap, you know every week that’s gone by it’s got worse.
‘But Tottenham are bang in it now, in trouble, they’re looking like they could even be favourites to go down, it is that desperate.’
Redknapp himself has been suggested in some quarters as a possible choice to take over from Igor Tudor, who has endured a terrible start to his interim tenure just three games in. Glenn Hoddle, 68, is another club legend to have thrown his hat in the ring.
Ray Parlour asked: ‘If that phone rings and it’s Spurs, are you going to come to the old training ground and have a little word with the players?’
Redknapp replied: ‘I’d have to, wouldn’t I? But it’s not going to happen. I can’t see it happening. I’ll be at Cheltenham on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.’
Spurs fans were in meltdown on Thursday evening as they watched their side throw away a lead and capitulate against the Eagles.
Fans gleefully taunted their supporters online and talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara even walked out of his show during taunts from co-host Jason Cundy.
O’Hara is among those who believe Redknapp would be the ideal choice to save Spurs from an ignominious drop to the Championship.
He said: ‘You need someone at that football club who cares about it, who has an affiliation to it, who is going to get the fans onside,’ O’Hara said.
‘I reckon Harry Redknapp should get a phone call. They should say, “Listen, you’ve got to come back, we need you back”.
‘Bring in some people who know the football club. Bring some people that are going to have some respect from the players and just play a formation where the players know what they’re doing.
‘You can’t just come in and change a formation and play players out of position when you’re fighting a relegation battle.’
Spurs are now just one point above Nottingham Forest and West Ham and face a tough test in their next Premier League outing away at Liverpool just days after a Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.
Igor Tudor is under massive pressure and gave a spiky post-match press conference on Thursday.
The 47-year-old was asked whether he would take charge of another Spurs game. ‘No comment,’ came the stern response.
He also refused to entertain questions regarding his future. ‘I don’t think in that direction, I have a job to do, that’s all,’ he added.
‘It sounds strange, but I believe more after this game than I believed before,’ said the interim boss. ‘I saw something. Some energy, some passion. I need to choose the right guys because the boat is going in the direction I want it to go and needs to go and who is in the boat can stay. Otherwise, they can leave the boat.
‘So when the other players will come back and choosing the right players I am sure we will have a good team and the victories will come. It is not easy to accept the moment where we are now but it is how it is.
‘It’s about believing and growing. There are still nine games to play.’
