Fernandez fronts up to angry Chelsea fans after 3-0 loss to Brighton

Enzo Fernandez was seen fronting up to furious Chelsea fans after suffering a fifth consecutive Premier League defeat, with head coach Liam Rosenior labelling their performance in a 3-0 loss by Brighton as ‘indefensible’.

Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck saw Brighton move above Chelsea into sixth in the Premier League table.

The result meant Chelsea have now lost five consecutive league matches without scoring for the first time since 1912.

Away supporters at the Amex made their feelings known on Chelsea’s fortunes, with chants aimed at the club’s ownership and Rosenior.

Fernandez, who captained Chelsea on the night, was among the Blues players to front up to the travelling fans at full-time.

Rosenior was also seen offering his apologies to the Chelsea fanbase, prior to criticising the attitude and spirit of his players in the defeat.

When asked by Sky Sports whether the defeat was the worst of Chelsea’s current run, Rosenior responded ‘By far, by far.’

 ‘It was unacceptable in every aspect of the game,’ Rosenior said. ‘I keep coming out and defending the players, that was indefensible, that performance tonight. 

‘The manner of the goals we conceded, the duels that we lost. Something has to change drastically right here, right now.

‘We need to look in the mirror. I need to look in the mirror. 

‘But I can’t keep coming out here and defending some of the things that we’re seeing. Manchester United, genuinely result wasn’t there but I felt we turned a corner.

‘But the general attitude, spirit was lacking – determination from three or four of the starting eleven. That’s nowhere near enough for this club. 

‘I can’t come out and lie, I tell the truth. That was an unacceptable performance at every level.’

The defeat has piled pressure on Rosenior, with Chelsea now seven points adrift of fifth placed Liverpool in the race for Champions League football, with the Reds having a game in hand.

Chelsea are facing a fight to secure European football next season after slipping to seventh, with Bournemouth, Brentford, Everton and Sunderland among the clubs who can leapfrog the Blues should they win their game in hand.

Rosenior’s side will turn their attentions to the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend, with Chelsea facing Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday.
