Danielle Spencer has revealed the ‘guilt’ she felt after her 2018 divorce from Russell Crowe.
The actress and musician opened up about her high-profile split from the Gladiator star after 15 years on the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About.
‘It’s really sad breaking up with somebody that you’ve known for so long, that you’ve had children with,’ the 56-year-old confessed to podcast host Sarrah Le Marquand.
‘Me kind of breaking up the family – and it felt very much like I was driving that – so I had to deal with my almost sense of guilt that I was fracturing the family, but obviously I did it for a number of reasons and I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think it needed to happen.’
Danielle added that while she and Russell are now on great terms, maintaining a friendship while co-parenting their two sons Charlie, 22, and Tennyson, 19, their post-divorce journey came with some ‘difficult’ moments.
‘There were days and moments where obviously things were not fine, were tense, we were unhappy and it’s sad,’ she shared, adding she didn’t want people to assume her split was smooth sailing.
In September, it was revealed that Russell and his ex-wife Danielle were reuniting on stage.
The former couple will share the limelight at Russell’s Indoor Garden Party, held at the Enmore Theatre on December 20, each performing music on the night.
Danielle revealed that the pair originally bonded over their love of music and performed together when their sons were children.
Revisiting that bond for this new performance has been a sentimental process for the actress and singer.
‘Russell and I connected through music in the early days of knowing each other,’ Danielle told news.com.au.
‘We’ve performed together countless times over the years. It seemed like a lovely full circle moment.’
Meanwhile, Russell has previously revealed that he is still in close contact with his ex-wife.
Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, Russell shared his excitement for the one-night-only performance and a surprising opening act.
‘My former paramour, my ex-wife, Danielle Spencer, she’s opening the show for us,’ he told the radio hosts.
Kyle went on to commend the Aussie actor for his ability to remain on good terms with his ex.
‘Isn’t it nice when you can get an ex to also show up and it doesn’t cause any trouble with the current missus? Everyone’s happy. She’s the mother of your child,’ he said of the blended family.
Russell replied: ‘Yeah everybody’s cool. The coolest about that is my kids. They’re like, ‘Dad, that’s really excellent’.’
The pair married in 2003, they split in 2012 and their divorce was finalised in 2018.
