Coronation Street fans are stunned as soap icon makes surprise return

Coronation Street fans were stunned to see the surprise return of a long-running soap favourite in Friday’s show, after an 18-month absence.

Since the soap’s inception in 1960, sites on the famous cobbles have become known by viewers across the nation, including the famous Rover’s Return pub, the cafe Roy’s Rolls and more recently-added Speed Dahl restaurant.

And in the latest episode, fans were thrilled to see the famous corner shop The Kabin make a surprise cameo, its first appearance since February 2024.

The hilarious scene showed undertaker George Shuttleworth emerging from the shop soaking wet, after being enlisted by Jenny Connor to fix her plumbing.

Jenny joked that George ‘looked like that Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudice,’ referring to the iconic scene in the classic BBC series that saw Colin Firth play the character and emerge in a soaked shirt after taking an impromptu dip in the lake.

In a scene packed with cheeky innuendos, Jenny continued to flirt with George as she spotted the naughty references in the plumbing terms he was using.

‘THE KABIN IS BACK!; The Kabin is back! #Corrie thank you;’

‘Really good to see The Kabin and in fact that was the best episode of Corrie I’ve seen for quite some time.

The Kabin first made an appearance on Corrie in 1973, and in 1990 it moved to its current spot across from the corner shop.

For 24 years, it was run by the iconic duo of Mavis Wilton and Rita Tanner, with the latter then going onto run the show with iconic soap gossip Norris Cole.

Currently, The Kabin is currently owned by Brian Packham, with Jenny asking for a job there in April of this year.

News of the latest change on the cobblestones comes after it was announced that the show had been pulling in record viewers after making one recent change.

The change took place in October 2024, when the long-running show became available to view on ITVX from 7am on the day of broadcast.

This meant that soap fans could either choose to tune in early or watch their favourite soaps at a time that better suited them.

The decision to make the change came after BBC soap EastEnders made a similar switch to iPlayer a few years ago.

Following the change, both Corrie and Emmerdale, which also made the switch, have enjoyed a record 124 million streams in 2025’s first quarter.

This meant that there have been an impressive one billion streams on ITVX so far this year.

To put the change into context, compared to this time last year, soap viewing has increased by 35 percent.
