Palmer ‘loses legal battle with a winery’ over trademark application

Cole Palmer rarely tastes defeat on-the-field, but the Chelsea and England star has lost a bizarre battle off-the-pitch with a French vineyard.

The tussle in question has been over his attempts to trademark his ‘Cold Palmer’ nickname and using that to launch his own wine company under that moniker.

Last year, Palmer made a move to trademark both his ‘ice cold’ celebration and the name ‘Cold Palmer’, in the hope of using it to sell a number of different products.

These include clothes, food, toys, toiletries, razor blades, diet drinks and alcohol.

However, the latter was opposed by a revered vineyard in the south west of France.

Chateau Palmer, which is in the Margaux region in Bordeaux, believed a trademark of the name would be a threat to its own image.

And after legal proceedings, Chateau Palmer – who sell their wine for as much as £750-a-bottle – have won their battle, according to The Sun, with Palmer’s legal team now amended its Intellectual Property Office documents to reflect that,

The Chateau Palmer wine firm was launched in 1814 when British Army officer Charles Palmer acquired the estate and subsequently renamed it from Chateau de Gascq.

Palmer’s wine preferences are unknown and given his status as a Premier League footballer, it is unclear whether the 23-year-old even drinks.

The ‘Cold Palmer’ celebration first came about in December 2023 when he scored during a 3-2 victory at Luton.

However, after the game, Palmer explained the story behind the move and how it wasn’t actually his own idea.

The England international revealed he got the idea from fellow City academy graduate Morgan Rogers, who had celebrated in a similar way when scoring for Middlesbrough against West Brom the previous week.

He told the now Aston Villa man that he would do the same when he next scored and has now made it his own.

However, it is uncertain when Palmer will be able to attempt to repeat that celebration as he continues to struggle with a groin injury.

Palmer is currently struggling with a groin injury and was forced off for Chelsea at Man United

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is hopeful the playmaker will not require surgery on it, despite being forced off in the first half of the Blues’ 2-1 Premier League defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.

Asked whether Palmer will need to have an operation on the injury, Maresca replied: ‘The medical staff, they didn’t mention to me about surgery.

‘I don’t know if in the next days or the next weeks, but I don’t think so, to be honest.

‘He made a huge effort on last Saturday to try to play the game. Again, he tried Saturday morning, he did the test, he was OK but not 100 per cent. But he wanted to be there to his help team-mates and to be there in that kind of game.

‘But unfortunately then we had have 10 players and also it was painful so we decided to change it. And it’s more day-by-day, week-by-week, game-by-game to see how it is and then decide what we do.’
