Carol McGiffin reveals she regrets tying the knot with Chris Evans

Carol McGiffin has revealed she regrets tying the knot with her first husband Chris Evans, as ‘for a quite a lot of the time, she didn’t like him’.

The Loose Women star, 66, was married to the DJ from 1991 to 1998, but in a new interview has confessed she ‘doesn’t really know’ why they tied the knot.

Carol has previously blasted her ex for being ‘manipulative’ and said he was ‘nothing without her’, and that the only reason they got married was because they were ‘swept along’ by the relationship.

The presenter shared that she had suspicions that Chris was unfaithful, but didn’t confront him as she already knew she ‘didn’t want to be married to him anymore’.

She said: ‘I’m not making excuses for bad behaviour, I’ve never cheated on anyone, but when you think about, this is called Suddenly Single, I have been single most of my life.

‘So the few serious relationships I’ve been in, there was only one of them where I would say “Yeah I reckon, he definitely did”.’

She went on to tell the Suddenly Single podcast: ‘But in the end, it was, obviously it was my first marriage, and I didn’t want to be married to him anymore anyway, and I don’t even know why we got married.

‘It was a big mistake, and whatever he was getting up to when I wasn’t around, I didn’t know for sure, but I kind of didn’t really care. I didn’t, for quite a lot of time, I didn’t like him.

‘People get past being cheated on, let me say that.’

Carol separated from Chris after two years of marriage, but their divorce wasn’t finalised until 1998.

The star has since said their nuptials ‘weren’t a good idea’, saying on Loose Women in 2019: ‘I was just swept along, at the time I convinced myself I couldn’t live without him.’

‘He was very manipulative. Anyone who thinks I married him for his money, that’s nonsense because I had more money than him at the time.

‘He was nothing without me, nothing. I’m glad it all went a bit wrong. I persevered with it and I was determined to make it work.’

It’s not the first time Carol has publicly slated her ex and back in 2010, she spoke at length about how she ‘honestly doesn’t know’ why they married – calling him the ‘ginger tsunami’.

She told the Daily Mail: ‘While I don’t regret it, I don’t like to admit that, for a while back there, I turned into a crazy, dependent, idiotic human being bearing absolutely no resemblance to the person that I was when I met him.

‘Chris was like a Class A drug and I was well and truly addicted.

‘I was working as a producer at cable TV channel Music Box in 1988 when I first saw him. He was doing a report on us for his radio show in Manchester.

‘He came into the office, all legs and bright orange hair – but it was the oh-so-confident swagger that got my attention.’

Talking about how they weren’t suited, she said: ‘We argued all the time. Our rows were pathetic.

‘We had one about a can of deodorant – the second he’d bought in the eight months he’d been living with me.

‘He seemed to think he was some sort of hero for buying it, so I suggested that he might have bought some of the other things he used all the time, such as toothpaste.

‘He went mad and threw the can across the room. It smashed four cassette cases that were just by my bed. Next morning, he squeezed the toothpaste that was left down the lavatory. See? Pathetic.’

Carol didn’t seem to be put off marriage for life as she wed Mark Cassidy in 2018 in Thailand, but kept the news secret for one year.

Chris went on to tie the knot with Billie Piper in secret after a whirlwind six-month relationship, with the 16-year age gap between the pair sparking controversy.

The pair split in 2004 and divorced three years later, but have remained good friends, with Chris even attending Billie’s wedding to her now-ex Laurence Fox.

Sources told The Mirror in 2016 that Billie leaned on Chris following her divorce from Laurence.

They revealed: ‘She’s been leaning on Chris as the marriage began to go wrong. He’s her soulmate.

‘He’s very protective of her and when there’s a problem Billie will always turn to Chris.’

Chris went on to marry golfer Natasha Shishmanian in 2007, after they first met in 2005 through her pal Ronan Keating.

The couple have four children – Noah, 17, Eli, 13, and twins Walt and Boo, seven.

Natasha gave birth to their first son, Noah Nicholas Martin Evans, in February 2009 and three years later, had their second son, Eli Alfred Michael Evans, in June of 2012.

Eli was conceived via IVF, after Natasha experienced a near-fatal ectopic pregnancy in 2010, and they did the same for the twins who were born in 2018.

Chris is also a grandfather after his daughter Jade from a previous relationship with Alison Ward had a son called Teddy in January 2015.
