British tourist found dead in swimming pool in Crete as three arrested

A British tourist has been found dead near a swimming pool in Greece, as three people were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

The 78-year-old was swimming in her hotel pool in Heronissos, Crete, on Sunday afternoon when she reportedly fell ill and got out of the water.

Minutes later, the woman was found collapsed by a sun-lounger by shocked bathers.

The Brit was given first aid before emergency services arrived on the scene and rushed her to hospital, where she later died.

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by negligence, including a 21-year-old lifeguard who was supposed to be on duty at the time, as well as two hotel bosses, aged 51 and 41.

All three suspects have been released on bail and police have launched an investigation to determine the woman’s cause of death.

A FCDO spokesperson told Daily Mail:’We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Crete and are in touch with local authorities’

A 78-year-old British tourist has been found dead in a swimming pool in Crete

The tragedy in the Greek holiday hotspot comes after a Brit was found dead on his sun lounger on a popular beach.

The 74-year-old man was discovered unconscious at around 12pm on Sunday, July 20, by fellow beach-goers on Stalis Beach on the popular Greek isle of Crete.

The Brit, who had taken himself to the beach in a bid to enjoy the idyllic sea, went for a swim before sitting on a sun lounger to relax.

However, he then became struck with a ‘strong feeling’ of sickness before losing consciousness, the cretapost has reported.

Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB) were immediately made aware of the incident and called to the scene.

Emergency services then worked tirelessly in a desperate bid to revive the elderly man, but unfortunately their efforts proved unsuccessful.

An FCDO Spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.’

In a separate instance, a  73-year-old Britih man was discovered at the spot in Agia Paraskevi, Siathos, on June 20.

Onlookers immediately alerting a lifeguard who was then able to provide first aid and call the emergency services.

While a doctor from a nearby health center tried desperately for 40 minutes to revive the tourist, he was later tragically pronounced dead.

An autopsy was set to shed light on the cause of his death.
