Engineer exposed himself on flight to UK in front of mother and baby

A biotechnology engineer horrified a mother with a young son by exposing himself on a long-haul Emirates flight from Dubai to the UK.

Britto Lorence, 27, who has a Master’s qualification in Food Science and Biotechnology, was seen to be exposing himself and carrying out a sexual act in full view of the young mother, who alerted cabin crew to his actions.

Lorence was in one of three seats in a row, the other two occupied by the mother and her baby son, as the flight took off from Dubai, bound for Newcastle in June last year.

The alarmed mother saw something underneath a pillow over his lap and feared that he was concealing a weapon, before she realised what Lorence, from Middlesbrough, North Yorks, was actually doing.

The mother, from Australia, had been preparing to give evidence via video link to a trial at Newcastle Magistrates Court, until Lorence decided to admit an offence of committing an act outraging public decency.

The defendant, originally from Kerala, India, gained a BTech in biotechnology at Abdul Kalam Technological University in his home country before gaining a post as a development technologist with Zaara Biotech LLC.

He then moved to the UK to study for his Master’s at Teesside University.

Prosecutor Brian Payne told the court: ‘This gentleman was a passenger on an Emirates flight and he was sitting in one of three seats in a row, as is common.

‘In the other seats were a mother and her very young child.

‘The flight boarded at Dubai and departed for Newcastle and she describes the male as having a pillow on his lap, appearing to be asleep.

‘The woman went to sort out a feed for her son and noticed the pillow was raised and became alarmed he was concealing something like a weapon.’

When she realised he was in fact exposing himself, she raised the alarm with cabin crew and Lorence was detained.

In a victim personal statement, the woman said: ‘I tried to hold my emotions together to stop myself causing my son any further alarm.’

She described herself as ‘deeply distressed’ by the incident and when she was told she would not need to give evidence in a trial, she said: ‘This is a blessing and I pray for the person involved.’

Mr Payne said that in his interview, Lorence denied deliberately exposing himself, but now admits he was masturbating.

He told the court Lorence had been asleep and woke up feeling uncomfortable and moved his private parts out of his underwear.

Andy O’Hanlon, mitigating, said he would have submissions to make on Lorence’s behalf, but added: ‘There are clear indications this case needs a pre sentence report.’

Adjourning the case for sentence until June 2, District Judge Kate Meek said: ‘All sentencing options remain open, including the option of an immediate custodial sentence or this being committed to the crown court for sentence.’
