BAFTA TV Awards – live updates: Adolescence has a strong start

BAFTA TV nominees have begun arriving on the red carpet for the biggest night in British television.

Adolescence actor Stephen Graham and White Lotus actress Aimee Lou Wood will be among those attending tonight’s star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

The awards will be hosted by comedian Greg Davies and feature musical performances from Cat Burns and Aurora.

Adolescence leads this year’s nominations with 11 nods, and Stephen is up for leading actor. The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One at 7pm.

He said in his speech: ‘It’s a privilege to be able to make people laugh after all these years.

‘I’m not going to be very funny now, as I haven’t written anything – or rather my comedy writers haven’t written me anything.

‘If anyone wants to know when Alan Partridge is going to die, it’s probably about when I’m going to die. I’m truly humbled, again.’

The results are coming thick and fast!

The Specialist Factual BAFTA has been won by Simon Schama: The Road to Auschwitz.

Accepting the prize, the historian declared: ‘I think the BBC is the only broadcasting institution that would dare to make this kind of film.’

He added: ‘It’s all the more important for us as storytellers to convey as vividly and seriously without preaching the importance of not going near the possibility of that happening again. We took on the task of trying to do that description.’

While the BAFTA for Factual Series went to See No Evil, over the likes of Educating Yorkshire and The Undercover Police Scandal.

The series is about the career of prolific abuser John Smyth and the 35 year cover up which led to the fall of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

And Best Scripted Comedy goes to…

Amandaland had scored the BAFTA for scripted comedy over Big Boys, How Are You? Its Alan (Partridge), and Things You Should Have Done.

Writer Holly Walsh said the awards ‘means so much’ and shared how she loved how many mums watched the popular sitcom with their teenagers.

She added: ‘We can all enjoy watching a posh woman from Chiswick getting hit in the face with a football.’

The Traitors are victorious!

The Celebrity Traitors has won the prize for best reality show, beating out The Jury: Murder Trial, Squid Game: The Challenge and Virgin Island.

The BBC series won rave reviews for its first celebrity version, and the gong was accepted by host Claudia Winkleman.

While a number of the stars joined her onstage, including Nick Mohammed, Celia Imrie, Paloma Faith, Cat Burns and champion Alan Carr.

Claudia dedicated the trophy to the ‘extraordinary cast who played with dignity, gusto and their entire hearts and we love them’.

And it’s already TWO wins for Adolescence!

Owen’s onscreen mother Christine Tremarco has scooped the best supporting actress win, beating out co-star Erin Doherty.

In her speech she emotionally thanked her husband Stephen Graham, who created, directed and starred in the show, who could be seeing tearing up in the audience.

Also paying gratitude to Hannah Walters, the cast and the crew, she praised child stars Owen and Amelia Pease as ‘the best on-screen kids ever’.

Owen Cooper completes his trophy set!

The first award of the night goes to 16-year-old Owen Cooper for his incredible performance in Adolescence – beating out his co-star Ashley Walters.

Accepting the gong, the teen said: ‘In the words of John Lennon, you won’t get anything unless you have the vision to imagine it.

‘So in my eyes I think you only need three things to succeed: one, you need an obsession; two, you need a dream; and, three, you need The Beatles.’

The host takes to the stage

Greg Davies kicked off the ceremony with a montage of some of TV’s biggest moments, including EastEnders’ iconic ‘You’re not my mother’, Blue Peter’s elephant-sized toilet disaster and Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win.

The comedian also pays special mention to the stars of the hugely popular Celebrity Traitors, including Celia Imrie’s famous fart.

While he jokes Alan Clarr turned ‘into a manipulative serial killer’, to the joy of his ‘victim’ Paloma Faith.
