Amongst the success stories at Tuesday morning’s BAFTA nominations were some shock snubs, including Wicked: For Good’s absence from all the major categories.
Last year the first Wicked film earned seven nominations, and came home with two wins.
But its sequel has failed to live up to the success of the first movie and a week after being shut out of the Oscar nominations entirely, it only picked up two BAFTA nods.
Though Jon M Chu’s movie earned recognition in the costume and hair and make-up categories, its stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were snubbed from the acting fields.
Other notable BAFTA snubs include no Guillermo del Toro in the Director category. Del Toro’s movie Frankenstein received eight nominations including a Supporting Actor nod for Jacob Elordi and a string of craft and technical nods.
As well as losing out on a Director nomination, the movie also was not recognised in the Best Film or Adapted Screenplay categories, despite being represented in both those fields for the Oscars.
The acting categories have thrown up some surprises with four actors who were nominated at the Oscars missing out at the BAFTAs.
They are Amy Madigan for Weapons, Delroy Lindo for Sinners, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent and Elle Fanning for Sentimental Value.
And in contrast, there are actors who missed out at the Oscars but have been nominated by BAFTA, including Paul Mescal for Hamnet, Jesse Plemons for Bugonia and Marty Supreme star Odessa A’Zion.
The surprise additions are largely due to the BAFTAs featuring six slots for its performance categories, one more than the Oscars.
The 2026 BAFTA nominations were announced by 2025 Rising Star nominee David Jonsson and Aimee Lou Wood on Tuesday.
Days after its success at the Academy Award nominations, One Battle After Another earned the most nods with 14, including one for lead star Leonardo DiCaprio.
Sinners is just behind with 13 nods whilst Marty Supreme and Hamnet scored eleven each. Frankenstein and Sentimental Value each earned eight whilst there was five nominations for I Swear and Bugonia and three nominations for The Ballad of Wallis Island, Pillion and F1.
The five movies up for Best Film are Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sinners and Sentimental Value.
Hamnet, Chloe Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s award-winning novel about the family life of William Shakespeare, has broken the record for the most nominations for a female-directed film in BAFTA history.
The winners will be announced on Sunday February 22 at the EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, which will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
