Anna Maxwell Martin is grilled about her relationship on The Assembly

Anna Maxwell Martin has given a rare insight into her relationship with cameraman Richard Cornelius.

The actress, 48, was grilled on her romance on ITV’s The Assembly on Tuesday night.

The critically acclaimed show, fronted by autistic, neurodivergent and learning disabled interviewers, has been widely praised for its disarming honesty and refreshing approach.

Anna, who met Richard while working on the Sky series Code 404, spoke about how she was the one to make the first move.

One member of the group cheekily asked: ‘I heard you met your lovely new man at work, could you spill the tea on how you met?

Laughing, Anna replied: ‘Yes, I will spill the tea. He is a cameraman.’

When the group asked if her partner was one of the cameramen filming, the actress said he wasn’t but went on to share how she met him.

Anna said: ‘His name is Richard. We’d just come out of Covid and I was on a production and I thought “he looks nice”. And so I made it clear to him I thought he looked nice and then we went on a date.’

Another member of the group asked: ‘And you got married?’

Anna replied: ‘We’re not married. We’re not married. I’m not marrying any of these cameramen!’

Richard has worked on Paddington In Peru, Wonka, Ted Lasso and Better Man.

Anna, meanwhile, has two teenage daughters with South African director Roger Michell, who died of a heart attack in 2021 – one year after the couple split – leading to Anna ‘only wanting to be with’ her children rather than working.

She previously explained to The Guardian: ‘When Roger died, it was difficult, because I wanted to be with my daughters all the time, but I also needed to work. We were suddenly a single-income, single-parent family and it was extremely hard’.

Her desire to be with her daughters, Maggie, 16, and Nancy, 14, was so great that she reveals she ‘no longer has the bandwidth’ to work with ‘a d**khead or an a**ehole’ – however she conceded she will tolerate this for ‘a money job’.

In 2022, Anna reflected on the couple’s split and the fact they remained best friends: ‘We didn’t have grudges. I don’t operate like that, Roger didn’t really operate like that… When Roger died, I lost one of my best friends. I see it as that.’
