Following a disastrous interview with BBC Newsnight in 2019, the then Duke of York stepped back from official duties yet he remained in the eye of the storm.

Following more damaging revelations in Virginia Giuffre’s memoir published earlier this month, Buckingham Palace decided to act in his strongest censure yet.

Daily Mail readers have called for King Charles to now remove titles from Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, after it was announced on Friday that Andrew would no longer be known as ‘Prince’ and would move out of the Royal Lodge.

Readers staunchly supported the King’s decision amid the ongoing fallout from Andrew’s friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, and urged him to go further as it is the ‘only way’ to save the monarchy.

The Palace announced on Thursday night that the former Duke of York will now only be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, after he gave up the last of his birth titles and privileges bestowed on him by the late Queen.

He is to be banished to live on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk while his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, is expected to find her own private accommodation.

Princess Anne today put on a smiled today as she was seen for the first time since her brother Andrew was stripped of his ‘prince’ title and home.

The Princess Royal, 75, visited the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh as part of a pre-planned excursion.

As usual, Anne appeared committed to her duties, even grinning at one point as she greeted the players during the Captain’s Team Run.

The King was also seen today around Sandringham Estate in Norfolk in a Range Rover.

Last night, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Andrew will no longer be known as a prince and, from now on, will simply be called Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

In hindsight, the downfall of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor – as he now is – was only a matter of time.

Pressure might have grown on King Charles III to all but banish his younger brother from royal life in recent weeks, but the links between the one–time Duke, the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell stretch back more than a quarter of a century.

Andrew has consistently denied all allegations of wrongdoing and the King may have felt that removing almost all of his titles two weeks ago was enough.

But further revelations were then published by the Mail on Sunday, and a posthumous memoir was published by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was trafficked to and sexually assaulted by the Duke as a teenager.

It will have become clear to His Majesty that he had no choice but to severe the cord altogether – forcing his brother to decamp from Royal Lodge to Sandringham and denying him the right to call himself a ‘prince’.

Looking back at the reams of emails, compromising photographs, court cases and distressingly detailed allegations laid out against Andrew over more than a decade – many of them revealed by the Mail – it isn’t hard to see why the King finally felt enough was enough.

A chimney sweep, a high-class cheese maker, a supermarket delivery and other service vehicles passed through the high white painted gates leading to Royal Lodge this morning – but there has been no sign of the man formerly known as Prince Andrew.

However teams of middle aged men, believed to be royal protection officers, have been spotted driving in and out of a second gate inside Windsor Great Park in latest model estate cars.

A succession of spaniels, Labradors and even one long haired sausage dog looked up bewildered at the press corps station at the gates as they passed through for their wet and windy mid-morning walks.

Andrew is said to be ‘sanguine’ about life without his royal titles as he starts his new life as a private citizen, it is being reported.

According to The Telegraph, those close to the disgraced royal say Andrew has been dealing with the ‘slicing’ away of his life for 15 years which had led to him being under ‘effective house arrest’ in Royal Lodge.

The newspaper reports the main point of contention to him losing his titles was where he would reside.

It adds Andrew will not move to Sandringham until the new year so he is not on the estate when the royals arrive for Christmas.

The brother of Virginia Giuffre has called on Andrew to ‘come clean’ and help give justice to survivors of sexual abuse.

He told Sky News:

It would be a very big vindicating moment for himself. My sister created a movement and it’s not going to stop so the best case scenario here is to just come clean and have the conversation.

A big part of this is acknowledgement if we can just to that point where these men can acknowledged what they did…you can never take it back but it is the right thing to do

Andrew has an opportunity now to come forward and give justice to these survivors.

Sky Roberts and his wife Amanda say they would be in London ‘tomorrow’ if King Charles wanted to meet to discuss his sister’s abuse.

He tells Sky News:

I welcome that conversation with open arms, I would love the opportunity to tell my sister’s story to the palace.

If the King is saying he stands with survivors out there and if the King is saying he stands with survivors and their victims, then meet with us, have a conversation with us.

We’re real people with real stories that can affect real change and I think my sister did something unprecedented that says advocacy can affect change, advocacy can lead to justice.

Virginia Giuffre’s brother has called on King Charles to put pressure on Donald Trump to release the Epstein files after criticising the US Government’s treatment of abuse survivors.

Sky Roberts told Sky News:

He should tell President Trump ‘put your big boy pants on’ and let’s get these Epstein files released so that we can go after these monsters properly.

His wife Amanda said Americans had been ‘gaslit and slapped in the face over and over’ by the Trump administration while trying to achieve justice.

She says her government had been using the ‘trauma’ of victims like a ‘political toy’.

The brother of Virginia Giuffre has said he won’t let his sister’s voice ‘die’, adding she would be ‘celebrating’ Andrew losing his royal titles.

Speaking to Sky News, he said:

We’ve had kind of mixed emotions, a lot of celebratory moments but also really sad moments because she’s not here with us.

She should be sitting on his camera with you right now celebrating this but also demanding more justice,” he says.

I think it’s a mixed bag of emotions over the last 24 hours but we are just hell bent to not let her voice die.

More than 20 members of the press have gathered outside one of the gates leading up to Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park, eagerly waiting for any signs Andrew Mountbatten Windsor may leave the property on Friday.

The group, which includes journalists from Australia, have been watching vehicles coming in and out of the gates to check for any removal vans or for a view of Andrew himself.

A man driving a lorry from a beverage company joked ‘I’m delivering his leaving drinks’ as he leaned out of the window.

So, Andrew has been exiled to the far reaches of the solar system, or as near as King Charles could manage – the depths of the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The King’s decisive action in removing his younger brother’s remaining titles – and booting him out of Royal Lodge, his stately home for the past two decades – was both dramatic and unprecedented.

But the move was also a desperate attempt to insulate the monarchy from the nasty contagion Andrew has been spreading.

It is being reported Andrew’s move from Windsor to Sandringham may be delayed until the new year.

Following the Buckingham Palace statement it is understood Andrew has been served to surrender the lease and will move out of the residence as soon as ‘practically possible’.

But now some are saying the move could take place in 2026 partly to avoid Andrew being at Sandringham when the Royal Family come for Christmas.

Andrew has previously been excluded from the Christmas gathering but that was when he was living at Windsor.

King Charles has been pictured leaving his Sandringham estate as he is pictured for the first time since stripping his brother Andrew of his royal titles.

The monarch looked noticeably glum at the wheel of his Range Rover as he drove around the royal estate.

Charles arrived in Sandringham yesterday afternoon hours before Buckingham Palace released its bombshell statement.

Describing Andrew as now ‘an ordinary member of the public’, trade minister Sir Chris Bryant suggested he should go to the US to answer questions about Epstein’s crimes.

So what will life now look like for Andrew given his newfound status.

Where will he live? Who will pay for him? Will he receive security? And what of his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson?

A Labour MP has called for the monarchy to become more ‘accountable’ in the wake of the King’s decision to strip Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his titles.

Rachael Maskell, who represents York Central, told the BBC’s Today programme:

I think the world’s moved on, and we need the monarchy to be accountable by all means, not least to the public. When we saw 80% of the public saying remove those titles, I’m sure there is relief across the country now that that has been done.

Ms Maskell, who introduced a Bill in the Commons to make it easier for the King to remove peerages, suggested there was still a need to change the law.

We know that peers, for instance, have ended up in jail, so I think we need to look at the whole system. And my Bill would have enabled people with all forms of peerages, baronets and dukes and princes and princesses, to have those titles removed, a mechanism which could be carried forward, not for just one circumstance, but all circumstances.

Downing Street has today indicated it has no plans to bring forward any legislation.

He’s splattered mud all over a noble 600 year old title and ruined it for future generations. The name Duke of York, first granted in 1385, has traditionally been reserved for the second son of the king.

Now it will disappear, maybe for good.

In time, seven-year-old Prince Louis might have inherited it on Andrew’s demise. But now the disgraced peerage will be stuck in a drawer, along with other royal dukedoms that have been sullied by their holder over the centuries.

So Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is not alone in having brought disgrace on a royal peerage – but in an age where the trappings of royalty have come under an increasing spotlight, the damage he’s wreaked is far worse.

The York moniker will live on – for the time being – in Andrew’s daughters, who style themselves Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie of York.

But there’s no guarantee they will cling to those titles in future years when Prince William becomes king.

Downing Street also confirmed the Government will not bring forward legislation to remove Andrew from the line of succession.

Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne despite losing his royal titles and being forced to leave his home on the Windsor estate.

Some MPs had backed a change in the law to prevent the already unlikely scenario of Andrew from becoming King.

A No 10 spokesman said: ‘There are no plans. The Government is committed to using parliamentary time to improve the lives of working people.’

Sir Keir Starmer fully supports the King’s decision to strip his brother Andrew of his titles, Downing Street has said.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister said:

We fully support the decision taken yesterday by the Palace. Our hearts go out to the family of Virginia Giuffre and all the victims who suffered from Jeffrey Epstein’s despicable crimes.

Referring to Buckingham Palace’s statement last night, he added:

We echo the statement yesterday that our thoughts and utmost sympathies have been and will remain with the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.

Andrew’s departure from the Royal Lodge, where he paid ‘peppercorn rent’ over 20 years’, comes amid an ongoing row over the residence since his dukedom title was stripped earlier this month.

However it emerged last night Andrew has been served notice to surrender the lease at the 30-bedroom mansion and will move out of the residence as soon as practically possible.

The younger brother of the King will be moved to a property on the Sandringham estate but the specifics regarding the relocation are unknown.

It has previously been reported that Andrew could be in line to receive a payout of more than £500,000 for leaving Royal Lodge as part of a ‘cast iron’ agreement for the sprawling 30-bedroom Windsor property.

Andrew acquired the lease from the Crown Estate in 2003 and paid £1million for the 75-year tenancy plus £7.5million for repairs and refurbishments, which was deemed the equivalent of paying for his lease ‘upfront’.

Under the agreement he will be due a refund of £557,000, with that figure decreasing until 2028, when he will be owed nothing.

We can now show you footage of the Jonathan Dimbleby footage in which the friend and confident of King Charles described Andrew as ‘boorish and entitled’.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are set to retain their royal titles despite their father Andrew no longer being a Prince.

The pair will keep their Honours in line with King George V’s Letters Patent of 1917, it is understood.

However, their disgraced father will now only be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

He is also set to be banished from the 30-room Royal Lodge and moved into a private home on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

Despite the controversy, King Charles was said to be very keen to ‘protect’ his nieces Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 35, who remain Her Royal Highnesses.

A source told the Daily Mail: ‘He wouldn’t have wanted to sign off on anything that would impact them.’

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are set to keep their royal titles in the wake of their father’s disgrace but their newly ‘tarnished’ status will have consequences, a royal expert has claimed.

As daughters of the son of a sovereign, the sisters, who jetted out of the country this week amid the mounting pressure surrounding their parents, retain their titles in line with King George V’s Letters Patent of 1917.

However, royal expert Christopher Wilson told the Daily Mail today that King Charles’s ‘soft-hearted’ approach to his nieces ‘may come back to bite him’ – and it may be up to Prince William to ‘finish the job’ when he becomes King later down the line.

As for Beatrice and Eugenie themselves, their princess titles will be ‘tarnished in the eyes of many’ due to their father and his links to Jeffrey Epstein, Mr Wilson claimed.

If opportunities dry up, the Princesses could be forced to accept more ‘low-grade offers’ like their mother, Sarah Ferguson, who, over the years has been accused of undertaking ‘dubious’ charity work and offering access to Prince Andrew for cash.

Mr Wilson told the Daily Mail:

The princesses use their titles to earn money – and if that starts to dry up as a result of their father’s disgrace, they may be tempted to follow their mother Fergie’s example of accepting more and more low-grade offers to use their face and name in order to rake in the cash.

Sandringham visitors and residents say they won’t welcome Andrew’s arrival following his eviction from Royal Lodge amid claims he will be ‘hounded’ in Norfolk.

Retired carer Jackie Cruickshank, 72, who was dog walking at Sandringham, said the King had made the right decision but added ‘I also think he’s been pushed’.

I don’t particularly like prince Andrew. But there’s others out there that are guilty.

Asked about him moving to Sandringham, she added:

He’ll be hounded won’t he. They won’t let it go now. What’s that going to do? He’s got to go somewhere hasn’t he?

Retired office worker Susan Larkins, 70, who was visiting the cafe today, added:

He’s a horrible man. We don’t want him up here.

Vanessa Beech, of Docking, who was dog walking at Sandringham, said:

As a local, I’m more or less a local, we understand the Royal Family. Most of us aren’t in their face. We let them live their lives and that’s really important to this part of Norfolk. But I’m worried about other people, how they will perceive it.

I have always thought Andrew was a buffoon and self centred idiot. I often thought what a nightmare he would be to his staff. He’s always been entitled so I always felt so sorry for them. They must be delighted at his downfall.

Sky Roberts, the brother of Virginia Giuffre – who claimed to have been trafficked to Andrew for sex as a teenager – has warned there could be more trouble for Andrew as his family’s fight for justice ‘was not over yet’.

He told BBC Newsnight: ‘It’s not enough – we have to have some kind of investigation that goes further into this. He’s still walking around a free man.

‘I commend the King – I think he’s doing an amazing job as a world leader setting a precedent – but we need to take it one more step further: he (Andrew) needs to be behind bars.’

Amanda Roberts, Virginia’s sister-in-law, also told Newsnight that she supported the notion of a joint US-UK investigation.

‘I think both countries need to look at collaborating here – the US government hold the key to the larger scope of the Jeffrey Epstein case,’ she said.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has ‘no moral boundaries’ and exploited his role as Trade Envoy to ‘line his pockets’ and chase women, royal historian Andrew Lownie tells a new Daily Mail podcast.

Speaking to Deep Dive: The Fall of the House of York, Lownie claims that during one taxpayer-funded trip to Thailand, the disgraced former prince had 40 prostitutes brought to his five-star hotel over just four days.

Lownie is author of the unauthorised biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, which chronicles Andrew’s spectacular fall from grace.

He told Daily Mail columnist Sarah Vine that Prince Charles advised against giving Andrew the Trade Envoy role in 2001, warning he would just ‘chase women and play golf’.

Lownie claims Charles was overruled by then Prime Minister Tony Blair and ally Peter Mandelson. So, in the midst of what Lownie describes as ‘a midlife crisis’, Andrew embarked on a series of taxpayer-funded trips that doubled as holidays.

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor was ‘arrogant, boorish and entitled’ and his behaviour ‘consistently embarrassed’ Charles to the point he had no choice but to excuse him from royal life, a confidant of the King has claimed.

Jonathan Dimbleby said he was in ‘no doubt’ that the monarch has been ‘consistently embarrassed, frustrated by and angry about’ his brother’s behaviour.

Last night, King Charles sensationally stripped Andrew of his Prince title and is throwing him out of the Royal Lodge after paying ‘a peppercorn rent’ for decades – effectively banishing the disgraced ex-duke from royal life for good.

A ‘culmination’ of recent revelations – including that Andrew told his friend, the paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, that ‘we are in this together’, as exclusively revealed by the Mail – forced Charles’ hand, Mr Dimbleby told the BBC.

The family of Virginia Giuffre – who claimed to have been trafficked to and made to have sex with Andrew at 17 – are now calling for him to face justice in the US, where he could potentially be extradited as an ‘ordinary member of the public’.

With Andrew set to leave Royal Lodge, attention now turns to where he will live.

Buckingham Palace said last night the former Duke of York, who will now be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, will be moved to a property on the monarch’s private Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

But even though the estate is set in around 20,000 acres, there are not as many publicly known options for Andrew’s new home as might be expected.

Wood Farm, the five-bed property which Prince Philip enjoyed in his retirement, is understood to have been ruled out as an option.

Princess Diana’s childhood home, the rambling Park House, has been empty for more than five years but is unlikely to be considered suitable because it spent decades as a respite centre for the disabled and is in need of renovation.

One option could be York Cottage (pictured), which was once the cherished private home of King George V.

Andrew has waken up today to a new reality – one which could see him distanced from his beloved daughters, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, according to royal experts.

Royal biographer Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail their relationship will ‘change drastically’.

‘His daughters will want to keep as much distance as possible from him. It will be devastating for them.’

Princesses Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 35, will retain their Royal titles despite their father no longer being a prince.

Angela Levin, a royal commentator and biographer, told the Daily Mail the pair will want to avoid him as much as possible but might have to ‘step up’ and parent their father if he becomes ‘desperate’.

I think Andrew will feel so crumbled about what has happened. He’s always been so pompous and trusting himself as being so clever.

For him to have everything taken away, and for that to happen in front of your children, who are grown up and can understand what he is being accused of, is very embarrassing to him, and for his own children. He will have to lean on them if he has no one else.

Andrew’s fall from grace has begun rapidly this morning as the former prince has already been removed from the Official Roll of the Peerage.

The Roll of the Peerage is a public record of peers and peerages of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom.

The list contains 185 pages of names including hereditary peers, members of the House of Lords and members of the Royal Family.

However this morning the roll no longer includes Andrew in a humiliating and rapid change to the public record.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is responsible for maintaining the peerage role due to his position as Lord Chancellor.

Mr Lammy has also been sent royal warrants by the King to remove Andrew’s Prince title and his HRH style, to which Andrew has not objected.

The Roll of the Peerage still includes Prince Harry alongside his brother Prince William, King Charles and Prince Edward.

The bombshell announcement out of Buckingham Palace that Andrew has been stripped of his status as a prince immediately, that he will henceforth be known as ‘Mr. Mountbatten Windsor’, and that he has been forced to surrender the lease to Royal Lodge leaves no doubt in my mind: Harry and Meghan are next.

Dozens of journalists from across the world have gathered at the entrance to Windsor Great Park following last night’s shock announcement at the dramatic fall from grace of Queen Elizabeth’s favourite son, formerly known as Prince Andrew.

Photographers, TV crews, and newspaper journalists arrived at imposing white-painted gates leading to Royal Lodge before dawn this morning in the hope of catching a glimpse of the humiliated former royal.

Residents and royal watchers joined the news crews in the rain to inspect each and every vehicle leaving the sprawling estate in the hope of seeing the man now known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

Windsor Great Park wardens closely monitored who entered the estate as rain showers fell – principally staff, delivery drivers and all-weather dog walkers.

This is the moment Prince William’s feud with his uncle Prince Andrew was revealed to the world – with the pair caught on camera sharing a frosty exchange at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral.

Last month, Prince William seemingly shunned his uncle on the steps of Westminster Cathedral, where a service had been held for the Duchess of Kent.

Andrew could be seen trying to jovially engage with his nephew in conversation, shortly after her coffin was carried into the state hearse.

He appeared to reminisce with the Prince of Wales about a previous time they spent together, telling him ‘we had a lovely time didn’t we then,’ according to a lip reader.

But William did not reply and simply glanced at his uncle, before studiously looking forward, rubbing his nose and rocking on his heels.

Despite the public humiliation of losing his royal titles, King Charles will be aware Andrew will require ‘care’ going forwards, Jonathan Dimbleby said.

He told BB Radio 4’s Today programme:

I have no doubt at all that he has been consistently embarrassed and frustrated by the way in which his brother has behaved.

At the same time, he is a brother and has to be mindful of that person and I imagine even Prince Andrew now, humiliated and broken, is in need of some degree of care.

You tell me that last time a Prince, the entitlement was removed from him.

Jonathan Dimbleby said the King would have woken up relieved after Buckingham Palace released its bombshell statement on Andrew.

He told the BBC Radio 4’s Today programme:

I think today he will be feeling a measure of relief that after going through due process, constitutionally, legally, being in touch with his family, keeping in touch with number 10.

I think he was well aware that it was chipping away constantly. He went to the Vatican, a really important constitutional and for him spiritual moment to pray with the pope -the first time in 500 years, what was on the front pages… Andrew.

I don’t think he cares about it for his own sake, he is well past that. He cares about it because that is what damages the perception of an institution for which he cares and for which he does everything that he possibly can.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt said the royal family remains ‘vulnerable’ to further questions about what they knew and when, and the timing of their decision to act.

He told the PA news agency:

Senior royals acted from a position of fear, not strength. They fear further revelations about Epstein’s relationship with Andrew and they are fearful of remaining out of step with public opinion.

They remain vulnerable to MPs and journalists continuing to ask questions about what they knew when; why didn’t they act sooner; and how did Andrew fund his settlement with Virginia Giuffre?

As they attempt to restore credibility and trust in an ancient institution, they desperately want to avoid questions about royal finances, including ones about the amount of rent they pay for their various properties.

David Yelland, the former editor of the Sun newspaper, said he believes the family of Virginia Giuffre will be invited to Buckingham Palace in the aftermath of Andrew losing his royal titles.

Ms Giuffre took her own life in April and her posthumous memoir Nobody’s Girl was released earlier this month.

Ms Giuffre’s brother Skye and sister-in-law Amanda welcomed the announcement, describing how an ‘ordinary American girl brought down a British prince with her truth and extraordinary courage.’

Speaking on the Today programme, Mr Yelland said he could see the Royal Family reaching out to Ms Giuffre’s relatives in the future.

I think the Guiffre family will be invited to the Palace at some point, It think Camilla will meet the family. I think that is a natural end to this.

Jonathan Dimbleby, a friend, biographer and confidant of King Charles, has today described Andrew as ‘arrogant, boorish, entitled’ and an ’embarrassment’ to the monarchy.

Speaking to the Today programme, Mr Dimbleby said Buckingham Palace’s statement was the result of a ‘culmination’ following revelations in Virginia Guiffre’s posthumous biography in which the former prince ‘clearly lied’.

In New York he mentioned it, when he was with Epstein, strolling, he said he had gone there to break with him, he was lying. He had not gone there to break with him, he continued the relationship.

He now is no longer a prince. Arrogant, borish, entitled, an embarrassment for the long time to the institution of the monarchy and to the King.

Sarah Ferguson has been evicted from Royal Lodge alongside Andrew as the shamed ex-Duke is stripped of his Prince title.

But unlike Andrew, who will move onto a property on the private Sandringham estate, Fergie will make her own arrangements, it is understood.

She has lived with her disgraced ex-husband in their 30-room Grade II-listed mansion since 2008 despite divorcing in 1996.

Her eviction comes just days after Fergie was dumped by ITV after once being hailed a ‘saviour’ of the broadcaster’s daytime schedule.

ITV bosses have confirmed that the former Duchess of York will no longer appear on their shows including Loose Women after she was dropped by a slew of charities.

Prince William and Princess Kate fully support the King’s decision to strip Andrew of his Prince title and evict him from Royal Lodge.

Sources told the Mail that the move was entirely down to the King and his advisors, without pressure from the government or other family members, such as William.

‘The process has been underway for some while but there was a need to get it right in the face of some very big challenges,’ a source said.

Emily Maitlis, the broadcaster who grilled Prince Andrew in his infamous Newsnight interview in 2019, claimed the Prince of Wales may have met with the princesses to give them the ultimatum last week.

Sources told the Daily Mail that Maitlis’s claims were ‘completely wrong’.

Asked about the claims, Kensington Palace said a meeting – or indeed a conversation – between Prince William and his cousins simply never happened. ‘This is not even a decision for him,’ a source added.

Anti-German feeling during the First World War prompted the birth of the Mountbatten name.

At the request of King George V (pictured), Prince Louis changed the family name from Battenberg to the anglicised version Mountbatten.

The King himself also changed the royals’ distinctly German name of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and chose Windsor instead.

He declared that ‘henceforth our House and Family shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor’.

Prince Philip, whose mother Alice was Lord Mountbatten’s sister, also adopted the surname when he became a naturalised British subject and renounced his Greek and Danish Royal title in 1947.

He was originally a member of the House of Glucksburg. Following the death of King George VI, Lord Mountbatten proclaimed the ‘house of Mountbatten now reigned’.

A recording of Question Time was interrupted as raucous applause rippled through the audience after they heard disgraced former-prince Andrew would be stripped of his title and house.

Crowds at the BBC show in Bradford reacted in delight after presenter Fiona Bruce revealed that the King’s brother will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

Further gleeful clapping could be heard after she announced the 65-year-old, who on Thursday was ranked the most unpopular royal ever, would lose his lease on Royal Lodge and be forced to find his own private accommodation.

The hostile reaction followed Buckingham Palace’s announcement that ties with Andrew would be cut.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, speaking on the show, said removing Andrew’s titles is a ‘really brave, important and right step’ by the King, and sends a ‘powerful message’ to sex abuse victims.

King Charles, 76, made the bombshell announcement about Andrew losing his royal titles and being kicked out of Royal Lodge last night.

His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence.

Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation.

These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.

Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.

The Government ‘warmly’ supports the decision to strip Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his titles, a minister has said.

Trade minister Sir Chris Bryant told BBC Breakfast:

We warmly, I warmly support what the King is doing today. I think the vast majority of people in this country will think that it’s the right thing to do.

Describing Andrew as now ‘an ordinary member of the public’, Sir Chris suggested he should go to the US to answer questions about the crimes of the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein, if asked.

I think that just as with any ordinary member of the public, if there were requests from another jurisdiction of this kind, I would expect any decently-minded person to comply with that request. So I feel exactly there same in this situation.”

What I’m basically saying is that I think that if Andrew is asked to do something by a Senate committee, then I would have thought that he would want to comply.

Royal historian and author Andrew Lownie believes the fallout doesn’t mark ‘the end’ of controversy for the shunned royal, now formally known as Mr Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

‘I don’t think it’s the end of it. I think there are many more disclosures to come, but at least they’re taking some decisive action. So, I don’t think it’s all over for him,’ he told The Mirror.

When queried if he believed a police probe into Andrew was more likely following yesterday’s announcement, he remarked that the ex-duke was being ‘throw[n] under the bus’.

‘Yes, I’ve been saying for some time they’re [the Royal family] going to throw Andrew under the bus to save themselves and this is the first indication of that,’ he added.

Last night, the family of Virginia Guiffre, who alleged Andrew had sex with her three times as a teenager, said the 65-year-old should now face an investigation, telling the BBC he ‘needs to be behind bars’.
