A frog saved from croaking it, a gorilla striking a yoga pose, and a fish flashing a smile are among the wonderfully absurd moments crowned at this year’s Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards.
The competition’s latest crop of winners displays the animal kingdom at its most unpredictable, with photographers capturing scenes that resemble slapstick sketches more than actual images.
Chosen from a staggering 10,000 global entries, the award-winners showcase everything from perfectly timed tumbles to creatures caught in poses that seem almost too human to be real.
This year’s judging panel sifted through photographs of birds brawling, foxes dancing, and even a rather unimpressed amphibian wrestling for its life – each picture funnier than the last.
The top accolade went to UK photographer Mark Meth-Cohn, whose shot of a high-kicking gorilla sent judges into fits of giggles.
But he was far from the only star, with a penguin leading a feathery parade and an orangutan with undeniable charisma also earning spots among the favourites.
Other winners included U.S. teenager Grayson Bell, whose dramatic frog showdown, ‘Baptism of an unwilling convert’ scooped both the junior category and the Reptile Amphibian and Insect award.
Meanwhile, Jenny Stock topped the aquatic category with ‘Smiley’, her brilliantly beaming fish.
Together, the winners highlight the joyful chaos of nature, reminding us that wildlife doesn’t just inspire awe, but can also be hugely comical.
