Wild conspiracy theories swirl around Charlie Kirk’s assassination

The assassination of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has not only shocked the nation but also sparked a wildfire of conspiracy theories online.

The 31-year-old conservative activist and media personality was shot in the neck while speaking at an outdoor event on Wednesday, just after beginning a Q&A session in front of hundreds of students and supporters.

Security rushed him from the stage, and he was transported to Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, where he was later pronounced dead.

Within hours of the shooting, videos, photos, and eyewitness accounts began circulating on social media, with users rushing to dissect every frame for clues.

Some of the most extreme posts suggest everything from suspicious private jets to hand signals and even claims that the gunshot was actually an explosion.

Conspiracy theorists have seized on brief clips and images, spinning intricate narratives despite investigators’ warning that no verified evidence supports these claims.

Law enforcement agencies have also urged the public to rely on official updates rather than online posts.

However, it has not stopped a flurry of online debate, as communities scramble to make sense of a shocking attack.

Plane theory

The 31-year-old conservative activist and media personality was shot in the neck while speaking at an outdoor event on Wednesday

A user took to X to suggest that a plane that allegedly 'dropped off' the radar may have been involved in the attack

One widely shared post emerged on social media shortly after Kirk was shot, suggesting that the perpetrator may have escaped on a private plane.

A user wrote on X: ‘Suspiciously 30 mins into the flight it drops off of ADS-B illegally and reappears headed back to Provo approx. an hour later.

‘Why did this plane turn off its radar? Where is the shooter?’

The tweet, which has been liked and shared thousands of times, has fuelled speculation among online communities that the flight could somehow be connected to the attack.

While many people debunked the theory, others went as far as tagging the FBI to look into the claim.

Replying to the post, a user said there was a simple explanation as to why the plane may have slipped off the radar.

They said: ‘I may not have been a sniper, but I was a radar technician in the Air Force, and I have extensive experience with the airspace around Utah… Just because that plane dropped off of radar, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

‘There are quite a few mountain ranges in western and southern Utah that block the radar.

‘A plane dropping off the ADS-B is not at all uncommon… looking at the flight path, it appears to me it descended for a landing in Page, Arizona (many Utahns vacation in Lake Powell, right next to Page) and then “reappeared” after having taken back off from that same airport.’

 ‘Hand gestures’

A user on X questioned two men who were allegedly 'giving hand signals'

Another theory circulating online focuses on a brief moment captured in video just before the shot was fired.

A post on X questioned: ‘…and why are these two guys giving hand signals immediately before the shot? Both standing perfectly to the side of the bullet track.’

In the clip, two men can be seen standing behind Kirk. One appears to be adjusting his hat while holding a phone, while the other moves his arms and glances around.

Observers on social media have speculated that the gestures could be signals related to the shooting.

Investigators have not confirmed any connection, and neither man has been named by authorities as having any involvement in the shooting.

‘Bush sniper’

The poster zoomed in on what they claimed could be a person camouflaged as a plant at the top floor of the building

Another claim gaining traction online suggests that a second person may have been involved in the attack.

A social media user shared footage of the top floor of a building overlooking the tent where Kirk was speaking, insisting that a figure was concealed among the greenery.

The post on X says: ‘Does this bush look suspicious to anyone? It lines up directly to where Charlie Kirk’s tent was and where he was shot.

‘I was very hesitant to post this until I got other opinions on the matter. I spent hours going through photos and videos until I saw this.’

The poster zoomed in on what they claimed could be a person camouflaged as a plant.

The grainy photograph shows what appears to be a dark shape partially obscured by bushes or potted plants on a balcony, and some users argued this was evidence of something sinister.

‘Explosion’

Another theory focuses on Charlie Kirk's shirt, claiming he was not hit by a conventional firearm

A third theory has emerged from a graphic video showing the moment Kirk was struck.

One post on X read: ‘LOOK CLOSE HERE. Conspiracy theories. This doesn’t look like a gunshot.

‘This looks like an explosion inside his shirt.’

The poster is suggesting that the impact seen in the clip is not consistent with a bullet, but instead looks like some kind of internal explosion or device detonating under Kirk’s clothing.

The gruesome video showing the moment of impact is used as evidence by the poster that the injury was caused by something other than a conventional firearm.

‘Ring switch’

Some users claimed that Kirk's ring mysteriously switched fingers after he was shot

Another video showing Kirk fidgeting with what appears to be the same ring debunks the theory, some social media users say

Another source of speculation is a video circulating on X, which users claim shows a ring Kirk was wearing switching fingers after he was shot.

The theory suggests the footage of the shooting was faked, pointing to an editing error with the rings.

One user questioned: ‘Why did Charlie Kirk’s ring visibly move from his ring finger to his pinkie finger after bullet impact?’

Another user said: ‘I watched Charlie Kirk’s ring switch fingers as he was falling backwards. Explain that one.’

One commenter refuted the theory, saying the alleged switch comes as a result of the technicalities of video footage and camera settings.

Another video from a previous event shows Kirk fidgeting with what appears to be the same ring. Many users pointed to that being a logical explanation for the perceived switch.
