A sceptical woman hired a private investigator to look into a man she was dating after he made a suspicious request about investment opportunities – and what she discovered was horrifying.
An upcoming Netflix series Love Con Revenge sees victims of romance fraud try to reclaim their dignity and unearth vital truths.
They are helped by ‘Tindler Swindler’ target Cecilie Fjellhøy and private investigator Brianne Joseph as they attempt to piece together the details of the scam.
A new clip from the hotly-anticipated series, shared exclusively with the Daily Mail, shows PI Brianne Joseph investigating an online romance scam predator.
In a gripping scene, she discovers in real time that, despite claiming he was a licensed investment broker, Chris Lloyd lied to scam a woman he was dating, Lindsay, out of a whopping $140,000.
‘We know Chris lied about being a major league baseball player,’ Brianne begins. ‘But the way he got money from Lindsay was through investments.’
Talking the camera through her meticulous process, she continued: ‘First, I need to establish whether Chris Lloyd is a licensed investment broker in the state of California.
‘If he is, he should be listed in the FINRA regulatory agency search. Let’s see if he is.’
The victim of the scam, Lindsay, chose to investigate her partner after she was encouraged by him to make a significant financial investment.
‘He knew tons about banking, money, credit, loans, just all sorts of financial knowledge,’ Lindsay said, before adding: ‘He made me feel safe in the investment.’
As Brianne searched for Chris’ name on the list, she found no results, but reasoned that ‘maybe he was working independently.’
‘Chris told Lindsay that he had investment opportunities for her through Planet 13,’ the PI said. ‘They’re an established company, one of the biggest weed dispensaries in the US.’
‘But he told Lindsay her check would be sent from Landmark Associates, so that’s who we need to look into.’
When Brianne called the company, no one was available to take her call, and she could find no email address listed on the website.
With alarm bells ringing, Brianne said: ‘That doesn’t sound right. I’ll definitely have to dig a bit deeper with this. This is not making sense.’
After some investigating online, Brianna stumbled across the key piece of incriminating evidence.
‘Oh, this is interesting,’ she said. ‘A civil lawsuit filed by a female plaintiff against both Chris Lloyd and the Landmark Associates. The allegation? Fraud.’
Watchers can see the words ‘fictitious business’ on the lawsuit splayed across Brianne’s laptop screen.
The new series reveals the fraudulent workings of experienced romance scammers, and highlights the red flags to be aware of when starting a relationship with someone new.
Love Con Revenge will premiere on Netflix September 5.
