A knifeman launched a terrifying 20-second attack on a stranger at a Tube station, before assaulting a woman as he fled the scene.
Nicholas Orlando Green, 36, viciously assaulted the two men, aged 44 and 42, in Kennington Underground station shortly after 10.30pm on Wednesday, March 27, last year.
Despite the callous nature of his crimes, Green showed no remorse.
After being later identified by police as a result of the bank card he used, Green ‘repeatedly laughed’ and lied in his police interviews, Met Police Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell said.
His two victims, aged 44 and 42, entered Kennington Underground station as part of a larger group who had just finished a local dance class.
After dispersing to separate platforms, shortly after, 36-year-old Green tapped into the station before travelling down to the platform.
Just a few moments later, he launched ‘a ferocious and unprovoked attack on the older man’, stabbing him for an estimated 20 seconds.
Then, as the second victim rushed over to put a stop to the ensuing violence, Green knocked him to the ground and stabbed him.
After members of the public intervened, Green walked towards the lift and proceeded to assault a 31-year-old woman before eventually fleeing the scene.
Both of his first two victims were hospitalised, with the 44-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds to his chest, alongside a fractured humerus bone in his left arm.
The second victim was said to have suffered from 13 total stab wounds.
Green was identified by police and arrested the following day, with officers locating the bank card he had used to tap into the station, alongside the trainers he was wearing at the time of the attack.
On Monday, September 1, he was found guilty of two counts of GBH with intent (Grievous Bodily Harm) at Inner London Crown Court.
Green was also found guilty of one count of possession of a bladed article, and one count of common assault.
He was found not guilty of two counts of attempted murder and one count of sexual assault.
Green was remanded in custody to be sentenced at the same court on a date in early December.
Describing the attack as ‘horrific’, DCI Attwell said that both men had been left with ‘life-altering physical and psychological injuries that they continue to recover from.’
He added: ‘Green’s torrent of violence that day has never been satisfactorily explained.
‘During police interviews Green repeatedly laughed, lied, argued and tried to frustrate our investigation as much as he could, but our officers worked tirelessly to gather crucial evidence that helped the jury see through his lies and bring him to justice.
‘I hope this outcome brings some measure of justice and reassurance to the victims and their loved ones. We will stop at nothing to ensure violent offenders like Green are held to account and removed from the streets.’
It comes as knife offences in London have increased by up to 86 per cent in a decade, a shocking recent report by Ex-Scotland Yard detective David Spencer has found.
London’s iconic West End has more knife crime than almost 15 per cent of the rest of the capital combined, according to research from the Policy Exchange.
Mr Spencer said that said his former force must take an unequivocal ‘crime fighting first’ approach to save the city from a knife, robbery and theft epidemic.
Knife offences across the country have increased by 78 per cent since 2014, but Mr Spencer said these figures had been skewed by the scale of the issue in the capital, where there were 16,879 knife crimes last year alone – about a third of the total across England and Wales.
In response to the spiraling figures, campaigners have slammed mayor Sir Sadiq Khan as ‘not fit for purpose’ and accused him of ‘undermining the Met Police at any opportunity’.
