Six people hospitalized in California mass shooting, suspect at large

Six people are in critical condition after gunfire broke out in a residential neighborhood in California – as police frantically search for the suspect.

Shots were fired just before 11:00pm on Saturday in Moreno Valley, located in the Southern part of the Golden State.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Office deputies rushed to the scene in response to several calls about the commotion, finding five victims with severe gunshot wounds.

Paramedics then arrived and took the injured people to the hospital. Another person with a gunshot wound went to the hospital on their own, and police later connected them to the same horrifying incident.

As of Sunday morning, no arrests related to the shooting have been made, KTLA 5 reported.

The events are under active investigation, and more details have not yet been made available.

DailyMail.com has reached out to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office for comment.

Saturday night’s incident comes about two months after a 22-year-old man was shot and killed in the same city.

On the afternoon of April 19, police found Xavier Cox suffering from several gunshot wounds.

Despite the life saving measures taken by first responders, Cox died at the hospital. A suspect was arrested and questioned by police, but then released after cooperating with their investigation, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

No updates on Cox’s investigation have been shared by the office.

In another fatal instance of gun violence, two Moreno Valley men allegedly murdered Ralph Ortega, 45.

Ortega was gunned down on November 1, 2024 in Moreno Valley. On May 30, Riverside sheriffs arrested Adam Carl, 29, and Ruben Puentes, 28, according to a press release.

According to Crime Grade statistics, Moreno Valley has a slightly higher crime rate than the average American city.

It is safer than 37 percent of cities, but less safe than the remaining 63 percent.

Police and the county fire department rushed to the hectic scene, as video showed several emergency vehicles swarming the area.

Horry County Fire Rescue transported at least 11 injured people to local hospitals. It is unclear how many of those victims were shot. Police said several others were taken to hospitals in personal vehicles.

Any gun-related incident leaving at least four people, not including the shooter, injured is a mass shooting incident, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

As of Sunday, the US has seen 165 mass shootings in 2025 so far, with more than 6,800 people killed and 12,200 injured as a result, the archive reported.
