Westminster Bridge closed as police rush to deal with ‘incident’

Westminster Bridge has closed this morning after police rushed to deal with an incident – sparking rush hour chaos.

The Thames crossing point remains empty as early morning commuters have been forced to take alternative routes to work.

The bridge was shut following a mental health related incident, police confirmed, with a cordon set up and ambulances stationed in the middle of the road.

Bus routes which usually run across the bridge were diverted, while traffic scanners suggest the road has been shut for at least three hours.

The AA stated: ‘Bridge closed due to police incident on A302 Westminster Bridge both ways between A3211 Victoria Embankment and Lambeth Palace Road.

‘Traffic is coping well. Detour in operation – for 12 bus routes.’

The Met Police said the bridge was shut due to a mental health incident, but declined to comment further. There have been no injuries.
