Ashley Biden has filed to divorce her plastic surgeon husband after 13 years of marriage, according to a new report.
The former First Daughter, 44, filed to divorce Dr Howard Krein, 59, on Monday in Philadelphia, as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.
To mark the moment, Ashley posted a since-deleted Instagram story that showed her walking through a park as she gave a thumbs up to the tune of the song Freedom by Beyoncé.
Ashley also reposted a quote to Instagram that read: ‘New life, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.’
She accompanied the quote with Lauryn Hill’s song Freedom Time.
Ashley, Joe Biden’s youngest daughter, married Krein in Greenville, Delaware, in 2012. The ceremony took place at the same church where Ashley was baptized, People reported at the time.
The former couple met two years earlier through Ashley’s late brother Beau, who died from cancer in 2015.
They lived in a $1.3million home in Philadelphia, where Krein works as an otolaryngologist and plastic surgeon at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Ashley has a Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and has worked for criminal justice reform in the state.
Ashley spoke about her wedding reception at the Biden’s lakeside estate in Wilmington when she introduced her father at the Democratic National Convention in 2024.
‘At the time, my dad was vice president, but he was also that dad who literally set up the entire reception,’ she said in her speech.
‘He was riding around in his John Deere 4-wheeler, fixing the place settings, arranging the plants, and by the way, he was very emotional.’
Ashley is the only biological daughter of former First Lady Jill Biden, who married Joe Biden after the tragic death of his first wife and mother of his two sons.
She and her estranged husband were in the Oval Office as Biden spoke to the nation in June, 2024, to announce that he would not seek re-election.
While she has mostly stayed out of the spotlight, earlier this year Ashley vocally defended Joe Biden against claims that he had been cognitively unfit during his last months in the White House.
In June, Ashley shared a beach photo of herself with her parents and wrote: ‘I am so grateful. too grateful to be angry about all this bulls**t.’
Her post came just days after CNN anchor Jake Tapper aired a segment questioning the transparency around Biden’s recent cancer diagnosis—suggesting the administration had ‘downplayed’ the severity of his condition while he was still in office.
Tapper’s reporting coincided with the release of his book, Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, which claimed to expose a White House effort to conceal Biden’s cognitive decline from the public.
Ashley didn’t mention Tapper by name, but her post left little doubt about its target.
‘The ONLY coverup of this family is a BEACH coverup !!!’ she wrote, mocking the idea of a media conspiracy and defending her father’s record.
‘The truth is, Dad gave his ALL to America and continues til this day. He NEVER gave up on you. And he listened to all of you. And he acted. The man has led his life by ACTIONS not words.’
Ashley’s post directly addressed critics questioning whether her father had been fit to serve during his final year in office: ‘He aged, YES! As we all do! And the stress of the presidency accelerates. But he was always MORE than capable of doing the job. And a damn good one.
‘He worked harder than anyone I have ever known- he took his duty and sacred obligation to this country very seriously.
‘The noise is so DAMN disrespectful and untrue …AND, it’s just that- noise/static- created by those committed to perpetuating and profiting from some real BS. Get lost with your anonymous sources and fake news.’
She also thanked supporters for rallying around her family during what she called an ‘uphill’ time: ‘AND, i am super grateful for the love and support over the past few weeks.
