Trent Alexander-Arnold has revealed that he has been learning Spanish for ‘a few months’ after making his debut for Real Madrid in the Club World Cup.

The England star left fans of his former club Liverpool dumbfounded when he addressed family, friends, and the media in fluent Spanish during his unveiling as a Madrid player last week.

After a difficult maiden appearance for Los Blancos, the right-back was asked about his linguistic talents by various outlets and he revealed that he had been learning Spanish in anticipation of the move to Madrid.

‘I’ve been learning Spanish for a couple of months,’ he told DAZN. ‘When I knew I was coming, I wanted to learn to adapt.

‘New country, new team and new city… It is important to show that you intend to adapt as best as possible to the culture. That’s what I’m doing.’

Given he has spent his whole career on Merseyside, many would have expected Alexander-Arnold to start life in Spain with little to no knowledge of the language.

Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold revealed he has been learning Spanish for a few months

The 26-year-old left many Liverpool fans dumbfounded by his fluent Spanish at his unveiling

His Anfield exit was marked with controversy as several Liverpool fans accused him of running his contract down to join the Spanish giants at the end of the season, leaving on a free transfer

However, many were left stunned last week as the former Reds vice-captain gave his entire address in Spanish, revealing that it is ‘a dream come true’ to join the 15-time European champions.

Parts of the Liverpool faithful, and many a football fan in general, have been left questioning how Alexander-Arnold is so well-versed in speaking the language, given he only decided to leave Anfield back in March.

Liverpool fan media outlet, Redmen TV, wrote: ‘Impressive for a lad who only decided in March really.’

Meanwhile, another insinuated that Alexander-Arnold has clearly been plotting to leave the Reds for longer than it seemed.

They wrote: ‘This guy has been planning this move for a WHILE!!’ Another red was inclined to agree: ‘Of course Trent should, when you’re planning this move for almost 2 years.’

Following Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in Miami, Alexander-Arnold insisted that he knows he ‘made the right decision’ to move to the Bernabeu.

‘It’s the first time that I’ve moved clubs so I didn’t know what to expect. I had no expectations coming into this,’ he told Mail Sport.

‘It’s a big change and it’s different but I’m loving every single minute of it and in my mind and my heart, I know that I made the right decision for me.’
