The tawdry Tonys! Hobbit star Luke Evans puts on X-rated display

Viewers of the Tony Awards were presented with a raunch-fest when Luke Evans thundered onstage at Radio City Music Hall this Sunday.

The Hobbit heartthrob is featuring in a revival of Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show as Frank-N-Furter, the role Tim Curry immortalized on film in 1975.

He hit the stage that night to deliver the character’s classic song Sweet Transvestite, which has proved an enduring fan favorite for half a century.

In his attempt to fill Curry’s shows, Evans, 47, put on a revealing display that decidedly distinguished his performance from that in the movie.

He wheeled around to show the camera his fishnets went up far enough to offer a generous view of his behind, with only a jockstrap thong keeping him FCC-compliant.

Fans were left open-mouthed, to the point that one overheated viewer somewhat overstated the extent of the exposure by gasping on X: ‘did not have Luke Evans showing full hole in a jockstrap thong at the Tonys on my 2026 bingo card.’

‘Luke Evans said: “we’re going a size smaller for tonight’s jockstrap” to his dresser. And I command him for it. Show it off, honey,’ another whooped.

Still another could not help but squeal: ‘i didnt know he’d be able to wear the jockstrap on national television UGHHHH LUKE EVANSSSSS STEP ON ME.’

Others were reduced to laughter, such as one who sniggered: ‘i can’t believe they didn’t find a way to censor luke evans’ costume for this tv performance.’

Evans’ stage look stood in marked contrast to the sedate white tuxedo he wore on the red carpet, which he walked with his Spanish boyfriend Fran Tomas.

He shot to global stardom as Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson’s three-part adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s slim children’s novel The Hobbit.

Since then, he played the antagonistic Gaston in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, which was led by Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.

However his roots are onstage, and he held roles in the West End productions of such popular musicals as Rent and Miss Saigon before he became a movie star.

Evans’ Broadway performance as Frank-N-Furter earned him a Tony nomination at this Sunday’s ceremony for best leading actor in a musical.

However he lost out to Joshua Henry for the revival of Ragtime, a 1990s musical about race relations in early 20th century America.

The other contenders in the category included Brandon Uranowitz, also for Ragtime, and Sam Tuttty for the British import Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).

Rounding out the competition was Nicholas Christopher for a revival of the 1980s Chess, which was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s former lyricist Tim Rice with ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus.

Evans’ Rocky Horror Show revival also netted a Tony nomination for Stephanie Hsu, who previously earned an Oscar nod for Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Hsu was up for best leading actress in a musical this year for playing the role of Janet, which was committed to celluloid by Susan Sarandon.

However she lost out to Caissie Levy for Ragtime, amid a field that included Christiani Pitts for Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York).

Another nominee in that category was Sara Case for Schmigadoon!, an adaptation of an Apple TV+ sitcom about a bickering couple who find themselves transported into the world of a classic Broadway musical.

Also nominated was Marla Mindelle for her turn as Celine Dion in Titanique, a jukebox musical of Dion’s songs that doubles as a parody of James Cameron’s Titanic.

The Rocky Horror Show was in the running for best revival of a musical but lost to Ragtime, which also beat out a revamp of Cats that is now subtitled The Jellicle Ball and serves as a tribute to queer Harlem ballroom culture.
