Brit is killed in a fight with UK tourist in Tenerife’s party strip

A 37-year-old British man has died after being involved in a fight early this morning on Tenerife’s most famous party strip.

Another British man, aged 23, has been arrested in the nightlife area of Las Veronicas in Playa de las Americas.

According to Television Canarias, there were two people involved in the fight, the victim and the alleged aggressor, the latter being arrested at around 1am.

He was held by security at the club and bar strip who held him until the arrival of the National Police.

Emergency resources rushed to the scene and tried to revive the fatally-injured but nothing could be done to save his life. The authorities ordered the immediate closure of establishments in the area.

National Police have opened an investigation to clarify the facts.

According to initial reports, the brawl involved a number of people and involved the throwing of glasses.

The dead man was reportedly on holiday on the island.

Las Veronicas is Tenerife’s leading and only dedicated party strip and once had a terrible reputation for fights and drug pushing.

It is visited by thousands of Brits as the bars and clubs stay open until the early hours.

Police are looking at CCTV cameras and taking witness statements.

They are asking anyone who saw the incident to contact them.

A British tourist was left fighting for his life in a Tenerife hospital in February, after being attacked when he chased down a thief who had just stolen a friend’s phone.

Theo Wright, 18, thought it was ‘game over’ when he realised he had been stabbed in the neck and lung while chasing the mugger on the last day of a lads’ holiday.

The incident occurred as he caught up with the thief behind a bar in the Las Veronicas area of the resort of Playa de las Americas, shortly after 2am.

Two quick-thinking Ukrainian holidaymakers gave him first aid as paramedics raced to the scene to support the teenager from Royton, near Oldham.

He told the Daily Mail from his hospital bed: ‘I really thought it was game over. I thought I was going to die because of the amount of blood on the floor.

‘It was only when I saw that, it dawned on me I’d been stabbed twice – in the neck and in the lung. It could have been really bad, but I’m alive and that’s the main thing.’

Theo said the ordeal began when he was outside a club getting some fresh air with a girl who was approached by a man asking to use her phone.

‘She said “No” and he said “It’s an emergency”,’ Theo recalled. ‘So I said, “Go on, it might be serious.”

‘She handed it over and he just took off. I sprinted after him – I didn’t mean to be a hero or anything, I just wanted to help her get her phone back.’

Theo said he caught up with the man and placed a hand on his shoulder to stop him.

‘He just swung round and that must have been when he stabbed me twice,’ he said. ‘I tried to run again but couldn’t, and I just fell to the floor.

‘That’s when two Ukrainian guys helped me with first aid. I saw all the blood and really thought I was brown bread.’

Theo, an electrical engineering student who recently passed his driving test, added: ‘I don’t regret what I did. I would do it again – but it’s embarrassing being called a hero.

‘A real hero would have got the phone back. But at least I’m still alive, and that’s what counts.’
