Terrifying moment British racehorse violently kicks out at groom

A stable groom at a British racecourse was sent to hospital after being kicked by a horse in a brutal incident caught on camera.

Kameko Fever, a three-year-old gelding, was preparing to run in the fifth race of the day at Redcar, on the Yorkshire coast, before the incident in the parade ring on Tuesday.

Travelling head groom of trainers Richard and Peter Fahey’s stable Chloe Briody approached Kameko Fever, who was wearing cheekpieces which act as blinkers to encourage horses to focus straight ahead. But the horse immediately drew up his hind legs and kicked out to his right – making hard contact with 25-year-old Chloe.

Screens were put up around Chloe in the parade ring but a terrifying video of the incident has subsequently gone viral online.

Chloe was sent to hospital with heavy bruising but has since been declared ‘fine’.

Trainer Richard Fahey told the Mirror: ‘It was one of my girls, Chloe, and she is fine. She went to hospital in an ambulance, they took an X-ray and everything is fine.’

A spokesman for Redcar Racecourse said: ‘Thank you to everyone who has expressed concern following yesterday’s unfortunate accident in the parade ring at Redcar when a member of Richard Fahey’s stable staff was kicked by a horse.

‘The staff member was attended to swiftly by expert medical staff at the scene, with further checks being carried out at hospital later.

‘Having spoken to the stable this morning, we are happy to confirm that the member of staff is fine apart from some bruising. She will be back on her feet soon and we wish her well.’

9/2 chance Kameko Fever went on to finish 11th of 13 horses.
