Graham Norton drops price on home after being ‘gobby’ about neighbours

Graham Norton has slashed £700,000 off the asking price of his luxury London home – after he admitted being ‘gobby’ about his neighbours.

The Irish comedian and presenter put the stunning property up for sale in April last year for £4.95million, saying he ‘finally felt brave enough’ to part with his beloved pad of 20 years.

Sitting on the banks of the River Thames in east London, the four-storey house features two reception rooms, views of the river as well as a riverside garden.

However, it has failed to attract any interest – and was quietly taken off the market in January this year.

Mr Norton, 63, has now revealed he made ‘gobby’ comments about local residents during a recent interview promoting his new ITV show – fearing they may have landed him in hot water.

Speaking on The Capital Evening Show about The Neighbourhood – where rival households compete for a £250,000 prize – he said: ‘Now I have to be careful here.

‘Full disclosure when we did the show last year, I did some early press for it and obviously we were talking about ‘your neighbours’.

‘Now my house was for sale, so I thought ‘I’ll be long gone by the time this comes out’. So, I was a bit gobby about my neighbours.’

Host Jimmy Hill appeared amused as Mr Norton realled the story

Speaking through gritted teeth, he added: ‘Yeah, house hasn’t sold.

‘There is a residents association meeting coming up soon. I won’t be going.’

When asked if the neighbours were ‘lovely’, Mr Norton admitted: ‘Oh they are lovely, it’s me, I’m the problem.’

An online property listing of the home – which has ‘five baths’ – shows it is now available for £4.25million.

Estate agent Knight Frank describes the Georgian grade II-listed house as a ‘beautifully presented and unique home which is set in an exclusive and private enclave’.

The listing states the home has been owned by Mr Norton and his husband Jonathan McLeod for 23 years.

It says: ‘Incredibly rare to the market is this special home which combines all the charm and character of a period Georgian townhouse with the addition of a detached former warehouse that offers extensive open, lateral space that one would associate more with loft living.

‘The current custodians have been in ownership of the prominent Georgian house since 2003, and is arranged over four floors within the Pier Head Conservation Area, dating back to 1811.’

Previously, Mr Norton commented on his decision to sell the upscale home.

According to the Sunday Times, he said: ‘We’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years and I finally feel brave enough to make a huge change to my life.

‘My favourite times have definitely been enjoying a drink sitting by the river on a summer’s evening.

‘My least favourite memory in the house was that time one of the dogs got stuck in a neighbour’s shrub.’

It is not the first time Mr Norton has put a plush home of his up for sale – as he previously listed a six-bedroom seaside pad in 2017 for £2.3million.

The stunning mansion in Cooden, Bexhill, had a private beach and master bedroom opening on to a balcony overlooking the English Channel.

According to property records, Mr Norton had bought the property for £1.3million in November 2009.
