Holyrood Election 2026: The count begins…

The polls have closed and the counting has begun. Later today, we will know just who has come out on top in the Scottish elections as the results start dropping in. Early indications are that John Swinney and the SNP will fall short of a majority. But will that open the door to another coalition with the Greens?

The rival parties are eyeing up 70 constituency seats, elected by the first-past-the-post method. There are a further eight electoral regions each with seven additional MSPs based on a form of proportional voting. In total, 129 parliamentarians are elected.

The magic number for a majority is, therefore, 65 but while that looks unlikely, there could be a pro-independence majority if the SNP and Greens were to share power once again. And that could pile more pressure on Keir Starmer over the prospect of IndyRef2.

John Swinney says SNP wins are ‘precious’

John Swinney is confident that – as polls have suggested – the SNP will emerge as the largest party in the Scottish Parliament.

However, it remains to be seen if the party will have a majority.

Speaking at the election count in Perth after he won the seat there, he said: ‘We are at the very early stages of the election count across the country.

‘But it is becoming clear that the Scottish National Party is going to emerge as the largest party in this election campaign. That is, for me, something incredibly precious.’

Arriving at the Glasgow count

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - MAY 08: Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar attends the Glasgow Count and Declaration at Glasgow International Arena on May 08, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. The 2026 Scottish Parliament election will elect 129 MSPs. It is the first election using new voting boundaries and features a record number of retiring politicians. While the SNP and Scottish Labour are the main contenders for power, new parties like Reform UK are expected to win seats for the first time. Mr Sarwar said: ‘This is clearly a disappointing result for us as a Scottish Labour Party. We argued the case for change, made the argument for change, but ultimately it is an argument we lost.’

Asked if the Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was to blame, Mr Sarwar said: ‘Throughout this campaign I have tried to make this about Scotland, I’m not going to change that today. Is there a national wave though that we tried to overcome but failed to do so? Yes.’
