War hero killed in pub brawl ‘while his pregnant wife slept at home’

An Afghan special ops soldier who came to the UK after fighting alongside British troops against the Taliban has died in a reported bar brawl.

First Lieutenant Abdul Wali Mamozai, 33, was expecting a baby with his pregnant wife Habiba at the time of his death, it is reported.

Officers were called to the Market Street area of Bracknell to reports of a deceased man at around 11.40am on Sunday, April 26, Thames Valley Police said.

Four men, aged 35, 33, 33, and 27, were later arrested on suspicion of murder and assault by beating.

They have since been released on bail.

Abdul is believed to have arrived in the UK seven months ago via the Government’s Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP).

The programme seeks to help Afghanistan-born servicemen who fought with British soldiers in ‘exposed or meaningful roles’ and so consequently may be at threat from Taliban reprisals.

After spending three months living at a hotel in Crawley, West Sussex, Abdul moved to The Grange Hotel in Bracknell, while working at a nearby car wash.

While at the hotel he met his wife, Habiba Haidari, 34, who said the couple were ‘very happy’ and had spent the day with one another before Abdul was invited out in the evening by a friend.

After waking up at around 3.30am and realising that her husband had not returned, Habiba called him more than 100 times without reply – before heading to the hotel’s security guards to report him missing.

Abdul’s grieving wife has said she wants to leave Bracknell because she is haunted by the memories of time spent with her spouse there.

She told The Sun: ‘We had a very short time together. I made so many memories with him in this short time.

‘Wherever I go in the hotel, I imagine him there. I remember our moments in every corner. I cannot live in this hotel because these memories will destroy me.

‘I have asked the local authorities to move me, because I cannot continue living here in Bracknell and The Grange Hotel surrounded by these memories.’

Mr Mamozai’s next of kin are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

Head of the Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, detective superintendent Kevin Brown, said: ‘Our thoughts are with Abdul Wali Mamozai’s family.

‘We are continuing to investigate the circumstances around Mr Mamozai’s death to fully understand the events that have led to this sad loss of life.

‘I would like to ask anyone who may have information that could help our investigation to please come forward and speak to us.

‘I would also request that people do not to speculate about details of this case or circulate inaccurate information on social media during this live investigation.
