Serena Williams eviscerated by fans over ‘tacky’ Met Gala look

Fans have brutally ripped into Serena Williams over her outfit choice at the Met Gala.

Serena, 44, was among a plethora of stars who hit the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night for the glitzy fashion extravaganza in New York City.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner opted for a shining, silver dress with gold accessories on the night, which later proved to be a polarizing choice among fans.

The dress, which was custom designed by Marc Jacobs, featured a one-shoulder silhouette, hip pads and a train of crushed silver, along with a gold vine down her leg.

While some fans were loving the design, others were less convinced and took to social media to brutally rip into the tennis legend’s outfit choice.

Taking to X, one fan wrote: ‘Body is tea but who mixes gold and silver together’.

Another user said: ‘What the hell is going on tonight. I think I might just faint from all these tacky dresses’.

‘Gold and silver is never a good combo and this is proof,’ another fan wrote.

One fan simply wrote: ‘Horrendous look’.

The scathing assessment on Serena’s look came just one day after she was labelled ‘cheap’ for wearing a provocative look to Anna Wintour’s pre-Met Gala dinner.

The tennis legend wore a backless red sequin gown featuring a striking asymmetrical silhouette and a daring open-side design for the event on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, on Monday night, Serena’s sister and Met Gala co-chair Venus Williams stepped out alongside her new husband in a stunning, black outfit.

The seven-time Grand Slam winner opted for a bold look in a custom light-reflecting crystal black gown by Swarovski with a pearl-adorned neck plate.

In keeping with the theme – Costume Art – Williams’s gown was inspired by her painting that was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, according to Vogue.

The athlete was one of the first to hit the red carpet, walking with her actor husband, who looked dashing in a black tuxedo and burgundy bow tie with a matching pocket square. The couple married in Florida in December.

As one of four co-chairs, alongside Beyonce, Nicole Kidman and Anna Wintour, Williams headlined the sports stars in attendance.

Along with the Williams sisters, sports stars such as China’s Olympic golden girl Eileen Gu, American figure skating hero Alysa Liu, fellow tennis player Naomi Osaka and WNBA star Paige Bueckers all dazzled at the glitzy gala.

Gu, who sparked controversy during the recent Winter Olympics, opted for a pearlescent bubble dress as she hit the red carpet on Monday evening.

The San Francisco-born star came under scrutiny in February for choosing to represent China, the country of her mother’s birth, instead of the United States.

Meanwhile, Liu, who won two gold medals at the 2026 Games, turned heads in a red ruffled dress, while also sporting her trademark hairstyle for the fashion event.

Her appearance at the Met Gala comes on the back of being named a house ambassador for Louis Vuitton, who dressed her for Monday’s star-studded gala.

Tennis star Osaka also made a splash on the night after stunning in two separate outfits at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

After arriving in a sleek, white ensemble – which featured a long, white gown with red feather details – she walked up the steps before removing the dress and headgear.

As she did so, the tennis star revealed a stunning, sculpted red dress that had been hidden beneath her first outfit, drawing attention from the media and fellow attendees.

There were a handful of male sports stars in attendance on the evening as well, with the likes of Joe Burrow, Russell Wilson, Steph Curry and Justin Jefferson all there.
