Parking fines could double after the Government said it was ‘carefully considering’ the findings of a trial in which a council hiked the cost of tickets to £160.
Ministers believe the £70 cap on tickets issued by councils outside London may no longer be a deterrent to rogue parkers and are reviewing their ‘effectiveness’.
But Labour and the Liberal Democrats, who run the council in Bournemouth where the one-month trial took place, have been accused of declaring war on drivers.
An increase to £160 is backed by cash-strapped councils and the parking industry, with supporters pointing out that the level has not been raised since 2008.
But the Conservatives accused Labour of a plot to ‘fleece’ drivers – while the AA said the higher fine would see badly parked drivers hit harder than vandals or shoplifters.
