Man, 35, charged with murder after headteacher killed in crash

A man has been charged with the murder of a grammar school headteacher after he was killed in a crash while cycling.

Michael Mullins, 56, died after being knocked off his bike in a collision involving a car that failed to stop in Altrincham, Manchester, on Monday evening.

Today, Simon Richardson, 35, has been charged with murder and failing to stop at the scene of the collision.

Paramedics treated Mr Mullins, from Weaverham, Northwich, at the scene, but he died at the scene.

Officers arrested three men and one woman in connection with the incident, which is understood to have taken place as Mr Mullins was on his way home.

He worked at Stretford Grammar School in Trafford, Greater Manchester, where he had been headteacher for 17 years.

Today Richardson, of no fixed address, was charged with murder, manslaughter, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court later today.

The other two men and woman have since been bailed.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Mr Mullins’ family said: ‘Our loving Dad, husband, Brother-in-law, “Diddy”, Uncle, Son in law, passed away last night after being knocked off his bike.

‘He was devoted to his family, and our lives will never be the same. A gap has been left in our hearts and within his role as a headteacher of Stretford Grammar school.

‘Our Dad gave us fantastic memories growing up including a trip getting lost at night around Washington D.C but it was in his role as a Grandad where he truly excelled.

‘Our love and memories of Michael will know no limits.

‘We will love him forever, to Saturn and beyond.’

Greater Manchester Police said the family is being supported by specialist officers.

Stretford and Urmston MP Andrew Western said: ‘I am shocked and truly saddened to hear the devastating news of Mr Mullins’ tragic death.

‘My thoughts and condolences go out to the staff and students at Stretford Grammar, and above all to Michael’s family and friends.

‘Michael was a lovely man and in the conversations we had it was clear that the needs of the children in his care were always at the heart of everything he did.

‘His loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him, here in the Stretford community and beyond.’

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham also expressed his condolences alongside his deputy, Kate Green.

They said Mr Mullins’ ‘loss will be felt not only within the school but across Trafford and the GM education family’.

Floral tributes were placed at the gates to the school this week. In a statement on the school’s website, Deputy Headteacher Liz Baxter said staff and students were dealing with ‘tremendous grief’.

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: ‘Officers are continuing to appeal for information as they progress their investigation.

‘This includes any witnesses, CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from around the area at the time of the incident.

‘Anyone with information is urged to contact us on 101, or via the LiveChat function on our website, quoting log 2771 of 20/04/26.
