Ruby Rose was once Hollywood’s hottest wildcard – a gender-fluid trailblazer who went from Melbourne DJ booths to global stardom almost overnight.
With a breakout role in Orange Is the New Black and a string of blockbuster appearances that followed, she became the industry’s ‘flavour of the month’ – but somewhere along the way, it all fell apart.
In recent years, the Aussie actress has raised eyebrows with a series of increasingly unfiltered social media posts and eyebrow-raising claims – culminating in her latest: an unsubstantiated and bizarre allegation involving pop superstar Katy Perry.
The comments, which quickly ricocheted around the internet, left fans confused and critics questioning whether Rose had gone too far.
When we looked back at Ruby’s meteoric career success, it was hard to pinpoint the exact moment she went from Hollywood star to industry outcast.
Born Ruby Rose Langenheim, she was raised in Melbourne by her mother Katia, an artist who walked out on Ruby’s father when her daughter was just two.
The actress has spoken about sexual abuse she suffered as a child and has been searingly open about suicidal thoughts that have plagued her from the age of 12, when she came out as gay.
‘I was getting suicidal thoughts when I shouldn’t have even known what suicide was at that age,’ she previously told the Daily Telegraph.
‘My past involved incestuous sexual abuse – and a turbulent home life which was not always safe.’
The situation culminated, she said, when six high school peers – five girls and a boy – smashed metal chairs into the back of her head, resulting in her being hospitalised when she was 16.
‘They didn’t like the fact I was different. I don’t think they had hatred for me, per se; I think it was more that I stuck out like a sore thumb,’ she told the Edit in a recent interview.
Ruby, who has bipolar disorder, has suffered from depression for as long as she can remember.
On March 31, 2013, she posted on X/Twitter that she felt she could no longer fight her demons alone and needed to check into rehab.
‘It is with great sadness that despite everything I have tried in the short time I was given I am still losing my battle with depression… these things need attention sometimes,’ she shared with her followers.
More recently she told Who magazine: ‘I have struggled with depression for years. I’ve gone from managing it to not managing it and it not being able to be managed.’
She went on: ‘You have to think about your diets, it’s why I don’t drink, I take medication for a few years, it stops working, and you have to find new medication. I have bipolar and it’s not going anywhere.’
Despite her personal struggles, Ruby was able to find moderate success in Australia’s entertainment industry in her 20s, working as a model, DJ and MTV presenter.
As her popularity grew, she found herself fronting major modelling campaigns for big names including Maybelline, and co-hosting popular shows such as Channel 10’s The Project and Australia’s Next Top Model.
She moved to Hollywood in 2013 to pursue acting and got her big break in 2015 when she was cast in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.
From there, the star’s acting career skyrocketed when she was cast in blockbuster movies such as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017).
She also starred alongside Hollywood fan favourite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) and Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017).
In 2018, Ruby also co-starred with Jason Statham in sci-fi thriller The Meg.
However, her career took a turn for the worse in 2020 when she controversially departed CW superhero series Batwoman after just one season.
Ruby starred in the show as Kate Kane, who is the cousin of Batman’s alter ego Bruce Wayne and later becomes Batwoman.
In October 2021, the star unleashed on producers, cast and crew in a social media post, claiming the network all but forced her to leave the show after they expected her to work just days after undergoing major surgery.
She also claimed the network had refused to take responsibility for several on-set injuries.
‘To my dear, dear fans still asking if I will return to that awful show, I wouldn’t return for any amount of money nor if a gun were to my head… NOR DID I QUIT,’ she wrote in a scathing online post.
‘I DID NOT QUIT, they ruined Kate Kane and they destroyed Batwoman, not me.’
In September 2019, during filming, Ruby uploaded footage of herself undergoing emergency surgery following the alleged on-set injury.
‘To everyone asking about my new Pez dispenser scar on my neck, a couple of months ago I was told I needed an emergency surgery or I was risking becoming paralysed,’ she wrote at the time.
‘I had herniated two discs doing stunts, and they were close to severing my spinal cord. I was in chronic pain and yet couldn’t feel my arms.’
But the controversy didn’t end there.
In October 2021, Ruby also made bombshell claims about her Batwoman colleagues, accusing her former co-star Dougray Scott of ‘abusing women’ amid a torrent of scathing allegations.
Scott strongly denied Rose’s allegations, labelling them as ‘defamatory’ and describing her account as ‘made-up claims that never happened’.
Warner Bros. Television Group condemned the claims as ‘revisionist history’, instead declaring it declined to renew Ruby’s contract for a second season as they received ‘multiple complaints about her workplace behaviour’.
After leaving Batwoman, Ruby went on to appear in the films Stowaway, Vanquish, 1UP and Taurus over 2021 and 2022.
She also appeared in U.S. action flick The Collective in 2023 and the Middle East-set war film Dirty Angels in 2024. This was her last movie role to date.
Ruby’s love life has also been marred by controversy in recent years.
The actress, who has been engaged four times, famously suffered an acrimonious split from The Veronicas’ Jessica Origliasso in 2018.
The two women briefly dated in 2008 before rekindling their romance in 2016, only to break up again two years later when Jessica called time on their romance.
Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O Show a few months after the split, Jessica said she was in ‘a very complex relationship’.
She added: ‘I’m still trying to come to terms with the reality of it every day so it’s really hard to explain to anybody.
‘There was just so much that happened, so much that I can’t even get into it.’
Not only did the relationship not end amicably, but while Jess was dating Ruby for almost two years, she was fighting with her twin sister and bandmate Lisa.
Lisa explained the siblings’ relationship became extremely strained during the time Jessica was with Ruby, and for a whole year they didn’t talk or perform together.
She said the period when they didn’t talk was ‘heartbreaking’, with Jessica adding: ‘When you have a twin, you’ve got back-up for everything.
‘But sometimes to evolve as an individual, and to find the love for myself I needed to find, I needed to just go through [that] experience for myself.’
The sisters admitted that from 2016 to 2018, the band almost fell apart due to their family rift, but a love of music eventually brought them back together.
In 2023, Ruby announced on Instagram that she had started writing a memoir, and promised to expose the pop twins – who she did not name but called ‘the sisters’ – for ‘how horrific’ they allegedly were to her.
She also claimed the ‘truth’ she was writing would ‘p**s a lot of people off’.
The book is yet to materialise and Ruby later said she had put the memoir on ‘pause’.
Ruby has also made headlines over the years for sharing concerning and often shocking social media posts.
In 2023, she unexpectedly vanished from social media on the eve of her 37th birthday, after sharing a worrying post about how it was ‘nothing to celebrate’.
She reappeared on her social media page two days later.
In June 2025, Ruby shared a series of troubling posts to Threads claiming someone was trying to kill her.
One of the posts included an eyebrow-raising remark about one of Jeffrey Epstein’s accusers, Virginia Giuffre.
Giuffre took her own life in April last year, after claiming she had been in a devastating car accident that was later revealed to be a minor prang.
Ruby’s wild posts first came in response to a Thread that asked: ‘Who is a celebrity that gave it all up at the height of fame to go live a ‘normal’ life?’
‘Hi. We just leave when people try to kill us. When we are illegally debanked and [redacted]. Hope that helps,’ Ruby answered.
‘Debanking’ refers to a bank terminating a customer’s accounts or restricting access to banking services due to perceived risks.
The Daily Mail is not suggesting Ruby was debanked for any of these reasons.
Ruby then went on to say: ‘I don’t want to be labelled ‘crazy’ and I don’t want to pretend to know how Virginia Giuffre died – but DOZENS of people, including a school bus, have tried to run me off the road in the last few years.’
Giuffre was one of the most outspoken accusers of convicted sex offenders Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. She died by suicide at age 41 at her farm outside Perth, Western Australia, on Thursday, April 24.
Ruby claimed ‘I have been followed almost every time I leave my home, since the day I broke my neck, back and ribs on Batwoman.
‘Since then I have doubled down on… Epstein. This has resulted in some seriously wild attempts on my life. Believe it or don’t. But I might as well update you.’
Ruby wrote: ‘This,’ beneath someone else’s comment on the thread which read: ‘Y’all they “left” bc [because] it’s a horrifying industry that is NOT safe.’
Fans flocked to comments beneath Ruby’s Threads post, begging the star to ‘stay safe and keep speaking out’.
Ruby responded to one concerned fan to let them know she’d had no suicidal thoughts of any kind ‘thank you for asking’.
‘In fact I am moving house every few weeks, countries every few months and trying desperately to stay alive until my book is finished and released,’ Ruby responded.
‘If you’re truly being followed and targeted, staying put is dangerous. You need to move ideally to another country, where you can be safe and off the radar,’ another person told Ruby.
‘Trust no one unless you’re absolutely sure of them. Change your routine completely. This isn’t about fear, it’s about survival. Your safety comes first act now!’
Ruby, who had recently been splitting her time between the US and Australia following the recent death of her father, responded: ‘Already done.’
In November 2025, Ruby once again made headlines when she lashed out at Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney, blaming her for the disastrous box office debut of the movie Christy, about the boxer and domestic abuse survivor Christy Martin.
In her online spray, Ruby claimed she was originally set to play Christy – who she referred to as ‘Cherry’ – and that the original line-up was nearly entirely queer.
She wrote: ‘The original Christy Martin script was incredible. Life changing. I was attached to play Cherry. Everyone had experience with the core material. Most of us were actually gay. It’s part of why I stayed in acting. Losing roles happens all the time.
‘For her PR to talk about it flopping and saying SS did it for the “people”. None of “the people” want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us. You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.’
Despite her allegations that Christy ‘deserved better’, the boxer, who shot to fame in the 1990s with 49 wins under her belt, threw her support behind Sydney and joined her at many turns of the promo trail.
Ruby’s latest public controversy came when she accused Katy Perry of sexually assaulting her when the actress was in her early 20s.
Ruby claimed in a social media post that the incident with the singer, 41, took place at a Melbourne nightclub.
She added that it had taken her ‘almost two decades’ to speak about it publicly.
However, a representative for Perry hit back at Ruby’s comments in a statement to the Daily Mail, saying: ‘The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies.
‘Ms Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.’
Making the allegations in a post shared to Threads, Ruby wrote: ‘Katy Perry sexually assaulted me at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s**t what she thinks.’
She added: ‘I was only in my early 20s. I’m now 40. It has taken almost two decades to say this publicly.
‘Though I am so grateful to have made it long enough to find my voice, it just shows how much of an impact trauma and sexual assault takes. Thank you for seeing me.’
Victoria Police confirmed on Wednesday its sexual offences detectives were looking into claims of a historical assault in Melbourne in 2010.
‘Police have been told the incident occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s CBD,’ a spokeswoman said.
It is not the first time Ruby has criticised Perry in public. She described the singer’s track Swish Swish as ‘purposeful poop’ in 2017.
However, Ruby backtracked on the comments just days later, writing on X: ‘Being mean doesn’t suit me and leaves me feeling dirty.
‘Truth is being mean leaves more leaks in your camp than the Titanic and I get so triggered when I think bullies don’t get held accountable and it makes me think I should say something… but it’s not [my] place.’
