Police ‘failed to solve 92% of burglaries’ last year, figures show

Police failed to solve 92 per cent of burglaries last year in Britain, new statistics dubbed ‘totally unacceptable’ have revealed.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp called on the government to crackdown on break-ins after the data showed that burglary has effectively become decriminalised in the UK.

Not a single case was solved during 2025 in almost a third of the country, with cops making an arrest in less than 10 per cent of the nearly 200,000 cases they investigated.

Meanwhile 143,000 of the 183,783 investigations finished last year were shut down without a single suspect being identified. That amounts to 393 every single day.

Police identified suspects in 27,500 cases but failed to prosecute, while 400 cases were deemed to ‘not be in the public interest’.

The report in The Sun highlighted London as a hotspot for burglaries, with seven of the top ten regions most blighted by break-ins found to be in the capital.

Not a single case was solved in boroughs such as Colindale, Totteridge and Woodside, Abbey Road, Cockfosters, Maida Vale or New Cross in the capital.

Police also managed to charge a suspect in less than one per cent of phone theft cases.

Leeds was identified as the worst hit city for burglary prosecutions with just 283 of 4,414 cases recorded across four neighbourhoods cracked.

While in Hampshire, forces in towns such as Basingstoke and Stevenage failed to solve a single break-in case.

Tory MP Philp described the statistics as ‘totally unacceptable’ as he criticised the Labour government’s decision to cut police forces.

He said: ‘The number-one priority for the police should be keeping the public safe.

‘It is totally unacceptable that over 90 per cent of burglaries are going unsolved. This comes as no surprise when police numbers are falling under Labour.’

The release of the statistics comes after a number of celebrities – particularly footballers – saw their homes burgled while they were out on duty.

Last month, Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias, 28, had his Cheshire home where he lives with girlfriend Maya Jama, 31, burgled.

Intruders broke in while Dias was playing in the Champions League against Galatasaray, with police confirming that items had been stolen.

The thieves made off with thousands of pounds worth of items including designer clothes, jewellery and electronics, according to reports. The couple had only recently moved into the Omaze prize-draw mansion, which is said to cost £20,000 a month to rent.

Dias reportedly raised the alarm after returning home and discovering the house had been turned upside down with valuable items missing.

And a year earlier Jack Grealish saw his home targeted by burglars who stole up to £1million in jewellery. It’s understood the attack left the forward’s girlfriend, reality TV star Sasha Attwood, ‘terrified’ and fearing for her safety.

Former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof also saw his Cheshire home robbed while he was playing for the Red Devils against Brentford in January 2022.

The Swede learned of the attack at half-time and was left with no choice but to leave Old Trafford immediately to ensure his family’s safety.
