LIVE: Iran fires missiles at UK base on Diego Garcia

The US-UK joint military base was reportedly targeted by Iranian missile strikes on Friday evening, sources told the Wall Street Journal.

Multiple US officials confirmed to the outlet that neither missile hit the base. Two sources said one of the missiles failed in flight, and the other was intercepted by the US.

Diego Garcia is located on a remote island in British waters and houses US bombers, nuclear submarines and missile destroyers.

The base is around 4,000 kilometers from Iran. The strikes undermine Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s previous comments that Tehran limited ballistic missile range to only 2,0000 kilometers.

It comes after UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer yesterday gave the US permission to use the base for ‘collective self-defence’.

Strikes from drones and missiles continued in the Middle East overnight on Friday, as Iran launched a fresh wave of attacks on US assets in the region.

Iran earlier said that five US military bases have been targeted, including l-Kharj in Saudi Arabia, al-Dhafra in the United Arab Emirates, Ali al-Salem in Kuwait, Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

Tehran also sent two ballistic missiles towards the UK-US military base Diego Garcia, although neither hit it, according to reports.

Meanwhile Israel has confirmed it launched new attacks on Beirut and other parts of Lebanon, as well as Iran.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps announced the 70th wave of retaliatory strikes in Operation True Promise 4 against 55 locations, according to Iran’s English-language Press TV.

In a statement to Press ITV, IRGC described the latest wave of strikes as ‘loud explosions, bursts of fire, and columns of smoke.’

The IRGC said five US military bases were targeted in the strikes, including l-Kharj in Saudi Arabia, al-Dhafra in the United Arab Emirates, Ali al-Salem in Kuwait, Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, and the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.

The statement added that the strikes reflect ‘a different dawn of a new regional order for Muslims.’

Israeli air defense forces intercepted and neutralized the Iranian missiles.

Donald Trump is reportedly strategizing with top administration officials on how to extract Iran’s nuclear stockpiles, sources close to the plans told CBS News.

Two sources told the outlet that the administration was considering deploying the Joint Special Operations Command, an elite military unit often sent on top-secret missions.

JSOC has been involved in several high-profile operations, including the capture of Saddam Hussein and the killing of Osama bin Laden.

The Pentagon has not confirmed CBS’s reporting.

The General Staff of the Army warned that explosion sounds were the result of interceptions of Iranian missiles.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Japan’s Kyodo News that Japanese ships could sail through the Strait of Hormuz.

He denied that the Strait was closed, explaining that Iranian officials would offer assistance to vessels from countries that were not attacking Iran.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Donald Trump on Tuesday and said the two discussed the ongoing military conflict in Iran.

‘Regarding the ongoing tense situation in Iran, we confirmed the importance of swiftly calming the situation and ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the stable supply of energy,’ Takaichi wrote on social media after the meeting.

The Israeli military launched attacks in Beirut early on Saturday, targeting Hezbollah members.

An evacuation warning was issued for seven neighborhoods in the southern suburbs, Reuters reported.

Lebanon has the highest death toll since the war started after Hezbollah fired at Israel in support of Iran on March 2.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby sent a letter to employees on Friday, warning that oil prices could reach $175 a barrel, according to CBS News.

Kirby said leadership is bracing for prices to stay high until the end of 2027.

Khamenei, who has not been seen in public since the Israeli attack that killed his father and predecessor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the war’s first day, said Iranians had responded with unity and resistance and ‘dealt a disorienting blow to the enemy’.

A US intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the statement raises questions about Khamenei’s condition, as his father traditionally marked the New Year with a video address.
