Trump says US will escort tankers through Strait ‘if necessary’: Live

Donald Trump said the US will escort vessels across the Strait of Hormuz ‘if necessary’ after Iran forced shut the vital shipping route as it continues to retaliate following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran threatened to set ships ‘ablaze’ if they continued through the crucial passage, which transports 20 per cent of the world’s oil, claiming it left three British and American ships ‘burning’ before a further attack on a ‘US allied’ tanker on Monday.

Oil prices have spiked worldwide and Mr Trump has now claimed the US will shuttle tankers through the strait.

He said: ‘If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible. No matter what, the United States will ensure the free flow of energy to the world’.

It came after he launched a furious rant against Spain, saying he would cut all ties with the country after it denied the US permission to use their shared bases to launch attacks against Iran.

The US President also lashed out at Sir Keir Starmer, saying ‘it is not quite Winston Churchill we’re dealing with’, before adding: ‘We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain’.

In a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, Trump said the UK has been ‘very uncooperative’ and has ‘ruined relations’ with the US.

Earlier Trump told Iran’s surviving leaders it’s ‘too late’ to talk as US and Israeli airstrikes obliterated a building in Tehran where the new Iranian leader would be be picked.

Writing on his Truth Social account, the President said: ‘Their air defense, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone. They want to talk. I said “Too Late!’

His remarks come as Israeli and US strikes targeted a meeting of senior Iranian clerics tasked with choosing the next supreme leader to succeed Ayatollah Khamenei following his death on Saturday.

Meanwhile Iranian drones attacked another major Gulf oil refinery in the UAE and also targeted the site of the largest American military base in Qatar as the US-Israel war with Iran enters its fourth day.

And the US embassy in Saudi Arabia warned of ‘imminent’ missile and drone attacks in Riyadh after the building was struck by two Iranian drones last night.

US Navy will escort tankers through the Strait of Hormuz ‘if necessary’, says Trump

Donald Trump has said the US will escort vessels across the Strait of Hormuz ‘if necessary’.

The strait, a vital shipping route which sees 20 per cent of the world’s oil pass through it, has been forced close by Iran as it seeks retaliation against Israel, the US and its allies.

Its closure has seen oil and petrol prices spike worldwide.

Iran has threatened to set ships ‘ablaze’ if they continue through the passage and claimed an attack on a ‘US allied’ vessel on Monday.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said: ‘If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible. No matter what, the United States will ensure the free flow of energy to the world’.
