Iran launches ‘revenge strikes’ on US bases after Trump attack

Iran has attacked US military bases across the Middle East, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Israel in ‘revenge strikes’ after Donald Trump targeted Iran’s Supreme Leader in joint attacks with Israel

Tehran has struck the Fifth Fleet service centre in Manama, Bahrain, and claims to have hit bases across the region including in Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait. Dubai, Iraq and Jordan have all also reported various missile activity so far on Saturday.

It comes after Trump declared he will ‘raze their missile industry to the ground’ as he warned troops in Iran to lay down their arms or face ‘certain death’.

The first apparent strike, which follows weeks of knife-edge tensions building up between the two countries, happened near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday morning.

An Israeli source said senior leaders including Khamenei had been targeted, with reports suggesting that head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards General Mohammad Pakpour has been killed.

It is understood that at least five cities have been targeted in Iran, with counter-strikes reported in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE.

President Trump said in a video on Truth Social that the United States had begun ‘major combat operations’ in Iran in a bid to prevent the nation from gaining a nuclear weapon.

‘You’ll be in the capable hands of our colleagues in London. Thoughts & prayers for everyone in our region. Ramadan Kareem.’

His comment came after the UK government’s foreign office had issued a stark warning.

Forty killed in strike on Iranian school, state media claims

The attack is said to have taken place at Minab Girls’ Primary School, in the county of Minab, southern Iran.

Europe split over US-Israeli strikes as EU expresses ‘concern’

Europe is divided over how to respond to the US-Israeli strikes on Iran today, with the EU expressing concern over wider escalation.

The European Union’s Foreign Policy chief Kaja Kallas said: ‘The latest developments across the Middle East are perilous. Iran’s regime has killed thousands.

‘Its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes, along with support for terror groups, pose a serious threat to global security.’

‘Protection of civilians and international humanitarian law is a priority,’ she added.

Italy’s Georgia Meloni has expressed solidarity with the Iranian population, and the UK’s leader of the Conservative Party has supported the strikes.

But Norway’s foreign minister has said the attack broke international law. ‘The attack is described by Israel as a pre-emptive strike, but it is not in accordance with international law. A pre-emptive attack would require the existence of an imminent threat,’ Espen Barth Eide said.
