EastEnders fans were left screaming after an infuriating blunder ahead of Nigel and Julie Bates’ vow renewal.

The characters – played by Paul Bradley and Karen Henthorn – are set to reaffirm their love in tonight’s (February 4) episode, already available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

Ahead of the BBC One airing at 7.30pm, the soap’s X account shared a teaser – but viewers soon picked up on a glaring mistake.

The account penned: ‘As Nigel and Julie get ready for their vowel renewal, Honey is trying to piece together exactly what happened last night in #EastEnders, tonight at 7:30pm on @BBCOne and on @BBCiPlayer.’

Noting the post said ‘vowel’ rather than ‘vow’, fans on the platform soon poked fun at this mistake.

One wrote: ‘IT’S VOW. VOWEL IS SOMETHING ELSE.’

Another added: ‘It’s all very well renewing their vowels, but what about their consonants?’

A third simply said: ‘*VOW RENEWAL.’

A fourth remarked: ‘I will take 2 vowels and 3 consonants’, along with a GIF of Rachel Riley on Countdown.

A fifth commented: ‘PROOF READING IS A THING.’

While a sixth concurred: ‘That’s 2 i’s, 2 e’s and a u then.’

Nigel was originally a beloved EastEnders favourite in the 1990s, before returning to Albert Square in 2024.

Since the character’s comeback, he has been battling dementia with Nigel’s mental state deteriorating.

Longtime friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) has been looking after him since, alongside Julie, who tracked down her missing husband.

Just before Christmas 2025, viewers confessed they were left in a ‘sobbing mess’ following a special episode focused on Nigel’s dementia.

Fans soon poked fun at the social media blunder posted by EastEnders' X account

After he overheard a conversation of Phil and Julie considering moving him to a care home, a distressed Nigel headed into the Queen Vic, with viewers then seeing him hallucinate late figures from his past.

Among them was Pat, with star Pam St Clement reprising her role 13 years after her character’s death, and Barry, which saw Shaun Williamson return after a 21-year absence.

While Nigel grew increasingly confused, he also saw visions of his late wife Debbie Bates, and younger incarnations of both Phil and his brother Grant Mitchell.

As Phil discovered his friend in such an upset state, he finally realised he could no longer care for him, and in heartbreaking scenes, Nigel told his pal it was ‘time to let him go’.

Last year, Julie tracked down her husband to Walford and returned to Albert Square to reunite with him
in December 2025, Pam St Clement reprised her role as Pat Butcher 13 years after her character's death, for a special episode highlighting Nigel's dementia

The special episode was praised by many viewers for his sensitive handling of Nigel’s battle with dementia, with some also thrilled to see Barry and Pat back on screens after such a lengthy absence.

They posted on X: ‘Wow @bbceastenders what a fantastic emotional episode, great to see Pat, Barry and Debbie, but seriously Paul Bradley was phenomenal tonight, we all love Nigel;

‘Well that left me a sobbing mess – such a powerful moving episode. Dementia is so cruel;

‘After having to watch family members battle this horrific disease, this episode was done so perfectly. Well done to everyone involved, my whole living room is literally in floods of tears;

‘#EastEnders wow one of the best #EastEnders ever well done, so well written;

I can’t lie, I cried. What a joy to see Pat again. Killing her off was the worst decision they’ve ever made;

‘What a poignant and beautiful episode of #EastEnders tonight!! And for once, the voice at the end didn’t say ”if you’ve been affected by any issues raised in tonight’s episode” but instead gave the number for a dementia action line. I was in tears by the end;’

‘I wasn’t sure if I was going to like #EastEnders tonight with it having ghosts in it, but it was so well done merging the past with the present.’

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
