Aston Villa exploring move for former Chelsea star

Aston Villa are exploring a move for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Unai Emery would like an energetic midfielder who can play the number eight role and is a fan of Gallagher from his time at Chelsea.

Harvey Elliott’s loan from Liverpool has not worked and the manager has made it clear they won’t give him the necessary starts to trigger his buy option.

Villa held talks to sign Gallagher from Stamford Bridge before a deal was agreed with Atletico.

Gallagher, still only 25, has made 27 appearances for Atletico this season and started in the Spanish Super Cup defeat to fierce rivals Real Madrid on Thursday.

He has a good relationship with coach Diego Simeone and is happy in Madrid but is interested by what Villa may have to offer.

Unai Emery is targeting January reinforcements to boost his side heading into the second half of the season

Much will depend on the financial restrictions Villa are working under but it is understood Atletico would consider offers of around £35million.

Villa want a forward as well as a midfielder and cover in defence to give Emery a shot at a Premier League title challenge or at least a Champions League qualification place.

Emery knows fresh legs can give his side that extra momentum heading into the second half of the season.

They have bought Alysson from Gremio and are adding teenager Brian Madjo from Metz as one for the future while Elliott’s loan may yet be cancelled but with a penalty fee. MLS side Charlotte, as revealed by Daily Mail Sport, remain in the wings for the England U21 international.

Villa admire Newcastle striker William Osula but that would also require a substantial fee.

The likelihood is they would offer a loan with obligation for Gallagher but Atletico have not been keen on that format so far.

Manchester United discussed that structure last summer for Gallagher but it was dismissed by the Spanish side.

There is also a feeling Gallagher would prefer permanent moves.

A return to the Premier League and potentially more regular starting time will also keep Gallagher firmly in Thomas Tuchel’s sights as he makes plans for the World Cup in the USA.
