A hairstylist has revealed the reason why Donald Trump’s hair appeared pink during a speech delivered in Washington D.C. on Tuesday.
As Trump, 79, addressed members of the Republican Party at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts yesterday, his hair was unmistakably pink-tinged, with social media users likening it to ‘cotton candy’.
According to London-based hairstylist Gustav Fouche, the pinkish shade ‘could be related to toning.’
Fouche told the Daily Mail: ‘To achieve a silver or lighter blonde look, violet tones are often added to neutralise yellow.
‘However, if too much violet is used or it’s left on slightly too long, it can shift the colour and make the hair appear pinkish rather than cool or neutral.’
The President’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, who served as a White House adviser during his first term of office, has previously said that her father dyed his hair using a product called Just for Men, which generally works to hide grey hairs.
However, Fouche emphasised that there are a number of other factors that could have made the president’s hair appear slightly pink.
The hairstylist said: ‘One common reason is lighting. Overhead or stage lighting (especially warmer-toned lights) can cast a pinkish or warm reflection onto light or silver hair.
‘We see this often with clients who have grey or silver hair; their colour can look completely different depending on the lighting they’re under.
‘Another factor could be colour reflection from the surroundings. For example, if there’s a red backdrop or flag behind him and strong lighting hitting that area, the reflected light can bounce back onto the hair and create a subtle pink or warm tint.’
The internet was awash with comments about the US President’s hair yesterday, with many suggesting a ‘rinse’-gone-wrong had left his famous blond mop pink.
One user wrote: ‘Donald Trump mocked over his new cotton candy pink hair and extra shiny orange spray tan during Kennedy Center speech.’
A second person wrote on X: ‘Donald Trump is unwell & should be removed. And WHY IS HIS HAIR PINK TODAY?’
Another added: ‘His hair is pink too. Like little old lady’s blue rinse but pink.’
A fourth quipped: ‘Orange guy debuts new pink hair. Like most things he does, it clashes horribly with the American flag.’
In the book ‘Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House’, which was published in January 2018, author Michael Wolff reported that Ivanka told her friends how Trump’s distinctive hairstyle came to be.
‘She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate – a contained island after scalp-reduction surgery – surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the center and then swept back and security by a stiffening spray,’ Wolff wrote.
Wolff added: ‘The color, she would point out in comical effect, was from a product called Just for Men – the longer it was left on, the darker it got.’
‘Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair color,’ he wrote.
Yesterday’s appearance, however, is far from the first time Trump’s hair has sent the internet into a spin.
At the end of 2024, he provoked a strong reaction online when he debuted what appeared to be a new hairstyle at his Florida golf club.
The then-president-elect was seen sporting a short, slicked-back hairdo at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
The new look was a stark contrast from the iconic bouffant hairstyle that has been a key feature of his public persona for decades.
It is unclear if Trump – who at a press conference the previous day was sporting his typical style – has changed his look for good or if he had just chosen a more relaxed hairstyle as he spent time at the club.
Regardless, social media users were shocked by the change, with some branding the swept-back look as ‘hat hair’ and said they were seeing the President-elect in ‘rare form’.
One user even joked that he would be rushing to the salon and ‘asking for the Trump 2025 look’.
A short 21-second video shared on X by MAGA backer Michael Solakiewicz showed the moment Trump debuted the new look at his golf club.
The President-elect was wearing golfing attire, including a Trump branded polo shirt, and carrying a red MAGA hat in his hand as he addressed the crowd.
Trump’s new look was met with both praise and criticisms online.
‘Trump’s latest hairstyle is here. It’s sleek-looking and makes a bold statement!,’ one X user tweeted.
‘Trump slicked his hair back today. Rare form,’ wrote another.
One social media user joke that Trump’s new ‘hair unlocks a unique and powerful aura that we’ve only seen a handful of times’.
But another cautioned that he ‘lost his aura, it’s so over’.
Some fans applauded Trump’s new look, claiming it was ‘spiffy’, makes a ‘bold statement’ and was helping him maintain a ‘younger’ appearance.
However, critics slammed the President-elect, saying he ‘looks awful’ and appeared to have gained weight.
‘My god . He looks awful.. must be pushing 450+ pounds,’ the X user wrote.
‘Holy smokes Trump just got a Styro Steve haircut,’ another critic added.
