Kate Hudson has revealed her relationship with her estranged father Bill is ‘warming up’ after years of fractious relations between the actress and rocker.
The musician, 76, who shares Kate, 47, and Oliver, 49, with ex-wife Goldie Hawn, left jaws dropping in 2018 when he made a series of horrific claims about his daughter – stating she was ‘a contrived, spoiled brat who’s done awful things’.
Bill and Goldie, 80, were married from 1976 to 1982, yet when she married Kurt Russell in 1983 her kids began to consider the actor as their father – calling him ‘Pa’.
Seven years after the release of Bill’s shock tell-all book, in an interview with The Guardian over the weekend Kate was asked about their relationship – and while she initially said: ‘I don’t really have one’ – before conceding: ‘It’s warming up.’
Both Kate and her brother Oliver have spoken candidly about feeling abandoned by Bill as kids and how they consider Kurt to be their true dad.
Bill’s 2018 tell-all memoir, 2 Versions: The Other Side of Fame & Family, left jaws dropping with his comments about his daughter, including claims he reached out to the star, asking for her to contact her Alzheimer’s stricken grandmother.
He wrote: ‘Kate doesn’t have to talk to me and she doesn’t have to give a dime of her millions. All I want is for her to call and say, “Hi grandma”, before it’s too late…
‘I have called Kate and texted her dozens of times begging her to help her grandmother, but she hasn’t responded to me…
‘I love Kate, but I think she has been contrived and destructive with me and with her other brothers and sisters. She is a spoiled brat in my eyes… She has done stuff which is just awful.’
While Kate initially commented in the interview that their relationship was non-existent, she soon amended her comment to state they are on the up.
Her latest update comes after Kate revealed last year that she and Oliver were ‘communicating again’ with their half-sister Emily, 19 – who Bill shares with American Graffiti star Cindy Williams. Cindy died in 2023, aged 75.
Bill and Cindy were also parents to son Zachary, 39. They were married until 2000.
Last year, Bill revealed: ‘My daughter Emily just had a baby [and] Kate’s been great about that,’ he gushed and added that it’s ‘great’ to see his kids bonding as adults.
Bill later welcomed 19-year-old daughter Lalania with ex-girlfriend Caroline Graham.
A source told Us Weekly that Goldie is ‘happy’ that Kate and Oliver are making amends with Bill after so many years: ‘They’re adults, so they can do what they want. Everyone is cool with what everyone is doing at this point.’
After nearly a lifetime of estrangement from her biological father, Kate shocked fans last year when she revealed on CBS Sunday Morning that although she doesn’t have much of a relationship with Bill, she ‘just wants him to be happy’.
Prior to the settling, Oliver made bold comments against his father, including one incident in 2015, when he took to Instagram to share a less than flattering comment about his dad dad on Father’s Day.
‘Happy abandonment day… @katehudson,’ the actor wrote, in a play on words for Father’s Day, alongside a childhood photo of himself and sister Kate with their estranged father.
In response, Bill sounded as if he had completely disowned his son Oliver, as well as his sister Kate, in an interview with the DailyMail.
He explosively stated: ‘I had five birth children but I now consider myself a father of three. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name’.
The Portland, Oregon native added, ‘They are no longer a part of my life. Oliver’s Instagram post was a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack. He is dead to me now. As is Kate. I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth.’
It appears he lumped Kate into the conversation due to her Instagram post on that same Father’s Day in 2015 showing her with stepfather Kurt.
‘Pa, just simply….. Thank you. Happy Fathers Day. I love you to the moon and back. ✨ #HappyFathersDay,’ she wrote in the caption, which appears to have left her biological father feeling disrespected.
Bill maintained his daughter’s post ‘was an intimate shot and, as her father, I found it inappropriate and unsettling. I’ll leave it at that.’
He continued on with the finger-pointing, accusing his ex-wife Hawn of ‘willfully alienating’ him from their children through the years.
