The Ashes LIVE: All the latest scores and updates from the Gabba

Follow Daily Mail Sport’s live blog for all the latest scores and updates from the second Ashes Test in Brisbane.

It’s getting frosty between Smith and Archer

The verbals have begun!

Steve Smith and Jofra Archer are chirping at each other in the middle of the wicket.

‘Bowling quick now when the games over, good on ya,’ Steve Smith says to Jofra Archer.

And Smith is backing up his chat.

The Aussie skipper pulls Archer over his shoulder to long leg for a big six.

Australia 56-2 and trail by nine runs.

WICKET: Gus Atkinson gets Marnus Labuschagne

Another for Gus Atkinson! It’s an outstanding delivery and there isn’t much that Marnus Labuschagne can do there.

It’s a short delivery and bounces up onto the Queensland batter’s gloves going behind to Jamie Smith, who takes the catch.

England have their tails up but Australia still trail by only 24 runs, with Steve Smith walking to the crease.

‘That’s a nasty delivery – absolutely flew off a length,’ Ricky Ponting said to Channel 7.

‘Had a look at the ball before, that just did too much, bounced too high.

‘This one’s right on the money. Just flicks the glove on the way through, Smith does the rest.

‘And there’s not much Labuschagne could’ve done about that.’

Australia 41-2 and trail England by 24 runs.

WICKET: Gus Atkinson skittles Travis Head

We’re back underway and Gus Atkinson who forces Travis Head to hit the ball onto his own stumps!

Great bit of bowling from Atkinson, but again, it’s come far too late in this Test.

It’s a small victory for England in this final innings, as Marnus Labuschagne walks to the crease.

Australia 37-1 and trail England by 22 runs.

‘Sorry Steve!’

Aaron Gocs, the Aussie comedian with the impeccable mullet who stopped play on Friday, has broken his silence to apologise to Steve Smith.

Many from the cricket world took to social media to applaud Gocs for his sensational mullet.

During an interview on the Aussie morning TV show Sunrise, Gocs revealed that he does all his hair styling himself before issuing an apology to Smith.

Gocs told Sunrise:

First of all I just want to apologise to Steve Smith, I’m sorry for distracting you, mate!

You’re a national hero! Honestly, I just didn’t think I was in his eyesight. They have a pretty big area behind the screen. I was just a bit thirsty and went to get a drink and came back and yeah, didn’t realise I was holding the game up. So sorry Steve!

I know sports etiquette and stuff! But we don’t have that many events in Brisbane so we don’t know how to react when stuff does come up! I just want to say on behalf of Brisbane, sorry Steve.

Gocs was also asked how he’s been handling the crazy exposure since he went viral.

It’s pretty crazy. You can put your heart and soul into projects for years and then you can just come back from buying a drink and then find yourself everywhere… People are saying: “Has your life changed?” But I’m here at a petrol station, on my way to a show in Newcastle tonight – so that’s the Hollywood life, I suppose.

LAWRENCE BOOTH: Too little, too late

Good old cricket. Australia need 32 to win, and there are a few concerns that rain may be heading this way, but off they all troop for tea after five overs in which Travis Head and Jake Weatherald were not shy of putting bat to ball.

Jofra Archer cranked it up to 94.2mph at one point (151.6kmh) but it’s too late as far as England are concerned. If the weather stays away, Australia will be wrapping this one up in a hurry.

Australia 33-0: That’s dinner!

Australia trail England by 32 runs and the players have walked off for dinner.

Travis Head (19) and Jake Weatherald (10) have both started very well out in the middle, with Jofra Archer interestingly bowling faster than he did in the first innings.

England looked angry and charged out against the Aussies, but it’s come too little, too late here.

Meanwhile, the clouds have gathered over The Gabba and it looks like we could have a spot of rain coming through in the next hour.

Australia 33-0 and trail England by 32 runs.

Fascinating insight from Alex Carey

Alex Carey took a brilliant catch to dismiss Ben Stokes earlier off a delivery from Michael Neser.

The Queensland bowler later lauded Carey for his work standing up to the stumps against the world-class Aussie pace attack.

And here’s his fascinating insight into how he does it…

Australia 29-0: Travis Head is having a field day

Travis Head is back to where he left off in Perth, swiping Gus Atkinson for six toward deep point, before smashing a four in the opposite direction to deep square leg.

This is becoming a bit of a horror show for England.

Australia 29-0 and trail England by 35 runs.

IAN BOTHAM: ‘If I was an England supporter, I’d ask the ECB for a refund’

Ian Botham has brutally blasted England for their performance in this second Ashes Test.

The former England skipper said to Triple M Cricket that he felt sorry for the travelling England fans, adding again that Ben Stokes’ side’s preparations have been poor.

Botham said:

They missed the trick. They could have sent the team that was playing in Canberra and they could have gone there and at least they would have had some experience with the pink ball.

What do we do? “Well, we don’t need to”.

Well, I suggest you do need to. You’ve dropped five catches, which England could now be ahead in the game for the first time. They’ve lost it and dropped five catches, of which three were pretty straight forward.

They paid for it. Every single player in that Australia side fought to be out there and bowl with the pink ball at the right time. Every single one of them got over 10 runs.

They stuck it out and they knew what they were doing and it was pretty obvious when Starc starts playing block, block, block, oh we’ll have one now. And England have got their field spread out.

It just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

If I was an England supporter and had paid the money to come here. I would be asking the ECB for a refund. This team is not prepared. I don’t think the bowlers are fit enough or strong enough. I don’t think that Ben Stokes was the pick of the bowlers because he kept running in bowling longer spells. Their main bowlers go out there and do the job. But they don’t seem to be able to come back.

We’re back underway and it’s a bad start for England

We’ve got around 20 minutes until dinner here with Travis Head and Jake Weatherald back at the crease.

Jofra Archer has taken the new ball under the floodlights after England set Australia a target of 65 runs.

There’s still some hope from the Barmy Army who are belting out Jerusalem in a bid to lift the spirits of the tourists, but this is gloomy viewing.

Archer steams in for his second delivery of the over and the ball swings across Head down the leg side. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith can’t get to the ball in time and it goes for four leg byes.

Stokes can’t believe it.

Australia 6-0 and trail by 59 runs.

Emotional Micahel Neser speaks on his first five-for in Test cricket

An emotional Micahel Neser has broken his silence on taking his first-ever five-for at his home ground.

Speaking to Cricket Australia, the Aussie quick bowler said:

It feels good. Still 60 to get here. Still thinking about the runs. But I’ll cherish this one.

I mean, I love The Gabba and the fans here. This is my home. The Ashes is huge for Australia.

It’s a moment I’ll never forget. Having my family there. My sister’s here. I’ve not seen her in a year and half.

All I was thinking is keep it very simple and fortunate enough I found a few edges.

That wouldn’t have been possible without Steve [Smith] and Alex [Carey]. They’re special.

England all out for 241

Michael Neser gets his fife-for, with Steve Smith again getting another catch at first slip.

Smith is doing another lap of The Gabba here in jubilation as Brydon Carse walks for seven runs off 10 deliveries.

England did a lot of good work earlier today, with Ben Stokes and Will Jacks getting through an entire session without loss, but England have once again collapsed.

It’s Neser’s first five-for in Test cricket and he has bowled brilliantly, getting the breakthrough by taking Jacks wicket and then Stokes’.

England lead by 64 runs and Australia are on the brink of taking a 2-0 lead in the Ashes.
