All flights are halted at Edinburgh due to IT issues

All flights were suspended at Edinburgh Airport due to IT issues affecting air traffic control, with travellers reporting they have been ‘stuck on the tarmac’ for hours.

Edinburgh Airport officials said in a statement this morning: ‘No flights are currently operating from Edinburgh Airport. Teams are working on the issue and will resolve as soon as possible.’

Officials at Scotland’s busiest airport added that the problem was ‘localised’ to Edinburgh Airport.

Passengers are urged to contact their airline for the latest information on flights, with cancellations and huge delays anticipated.

One traveller looking to take off this morning to Paris, France, revealed on their social media that they had been ‘sat on the tarmac’ since 6.45am this morning. They described the situation as ‘completely unacceptable’.

Another looking to fly off to Antalya, Turkey, said multiple flights were ‘beginning to be cancelled’ due to the ongoing IT problem.

A third lamented that it was ‘the one time’ his Ryanair flight had boarded and was ‘ready to go’ before the catastrophic issue hit.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 also revealed a Delta Air Lines flight from New York JFK to Edinburgh went into a holding pattern above the Scottish capital before being diverted to Dublin.

Travellers impacted by the delays have taken to social media to share their experiences

There is no clear information as yet as to what caused the IT issue.

At around 10.40am this morning, Edinburgh Airport reported that flights were now being resumed after the issue was fixed.

Air traffic control (ATC) at Edinburgh airport is provided by Air Navigation Solutions (ANSL).

Nats, which manages most of the UK’s airspace, said it will ‘work closely with the airlines impacted and support as best we can’.

Edinburgh Airport is the sixth busiest airport in the UK, and the busiest in Scotland.

It was used by 15.8 million passengers last year.

Officials said: ‘Flights have now resumed following the IT issue with our air traffic control provider. We thank passengers for their patience and understanding’.

It is understood the issue is not linked to this morning’s Cloudflare outage, which has knocked dozens of major websites offline.

Among those sites affected are Zoom, Canva, Discord, LinkedIn, Deliveroo, Substack, Shopify, Coinbase and Vinted.

It marks the second outage in less than a month for Cloudflare, which powers internet requests for millions of websites.
