It took an age but a very slight reaction from Snicko has been judged enough to sent the keeper on his way. England could make the argument that the noise could have been made by Smith’s spikes on the pitch.

Alex Carey was very excited, claiming Smith caught behind off a Doggett ball that was going down leg side – and Steve Smith sees enough in it to ask for the DRS.

Perth currently feels a bit like Headingley – a ground that changes drastically depending on atmospherics.

England’s tail were blown away during a spell of five for 12 in the first innings and five for 23 in eight overs under heavy cloud cover has altered the dynamic in the second.

The keeper didn’t connect with Starc’s first ball of the 27th over, edging it just high enough to get over the outstretched hands of Khawaja.

They get through that Doggett over without loss and without giving the Aussies any chances.

That change of ends for Starc was a masterstroke.
