The Ashes Day 2 LIVE: Aussies take four quick scalps in stunning spell

Follow Daily Mail’s live blog for all the latest action, insight and updates from the first Test.

Broad’s advice for Aussies with injured Usman Khawaja

Stuart Broad doesn’t think everybody should move up a spot if Khawaja cannot bat today:

‘I like clarity. Usman Khawaja is out, I will not use you again today and give you another night’s sleep to recover, if we needed. My preference would not be to shuffle everyone else up one. I would pick someone lower in the order to come up and open the batting. I think Marnus Labuschagne three and Steve Smith at you want to bring Travis Head to number two, fairy to number two, Mitch Starc to number two, but I would keep them came into the game. I think you’re shifting every single person’s role you are playing with everyone’s brains just in different ways.’

England 7-112 (Overs 28)

A streaky shot from Carse goes over the wicketkeeper’s head for SIX. Valuable runs for England in what has turned out to be a low-scoring contest

WICKET! Smith goes, caught Carey, England 7-104

It took an age but a very slight reaction from Snicko has been judged enough to sent the keeper on his way. England could make the argument that the noise could have been made by Smith’s spikes on the pitch.

Huge appeal!

Alex Carey was very excited, claiming Smith caught behind off a Doggett ball that was going down leg side – and Steve Smith sees enough in it to ask for the DRS.

Khawaja limps off hurt, England 6-104 after 27 overs

Lovely shot off his legs by Atkinson for four, a terrific lofted strike that was never in danger of being caught.

Now Khawaja is limping his way off the ground after trying to take that chance from Smith on the first ball of the over.

He looks to be in a fair bit of discomfort, grimacing as he gets off the pitch.

‘Perth feels like Headingley’

This just in from Richard Gibson in Perth…

Perth currently feels a bit like Headingley – a ground that changes drastically depending on atmospherics.

England’s tail were blown away during a spell of five for 12 in the first innings and five for 23 in eight overs under heavy cloud cover has altered the dynamic in the second.

Chance! Smith just escapes a slips catch

The keeper didn’t connect with Starc’s first ball of the 27th over, edging it just high enough to get over the outstretched hands of Khawaja.

England 6-95 after losing 5-30

They get through that Doggett over without loss and without giving the Aussies any chances.

England 6-93 after 25 overs, lead by 133

That change of ends for Starc was a masterstroke.

A look at Starc’s 10th of the match

WICKET! Stokes falls to Starc for 2

Thick outside edge to Steve Smith in the slips and Starc salutes the crowd after taking his 10th wicket of the match.

England are 6-88.

England 5-85 after 24 overs, lead by 125

Just two from that Doggett over, and now Mitchell Starc has swung around to bowl from the members’ end.
