Woman, 49, dies a month after girl, nine, found dead in village

A 49-year-old woman has died in hospital a month after the death of a nine-year-old girl at a house in Islip.

The woman had been kept under police watch after she was found severely injured at a property in the Oxfordshire village, on the edge of the Cotswolds, on October 21.

She was discovered alongside a young girl who was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other children, a boy and a girl, were treated in hospital and later discharged.

The woman succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, Thames Valley Police said.

Her next of kin have been informed and a report is being prepared for the coroner.

A force spokesperson said: ‘Our investigation following the death of the nine-year-old girl on Tuesday 21 October is ongoing and we continue to support her family at this extremely difficult time.

‘We are still not currently seeking anyone else in connection with this incident.’

Last month, investigators said they had been unable to determine the cause of the nine-year-old’s death following a post-mortem examination.

Those living in Islip were rocked by the tragedy. One local woman said the youngster had lived with her mother and a sibling.

She said: ‘It’s terribly sad – I can’t imagine what on earth must have happened. This is something that never happens in this village. Very shocking and sad and totally out of the blue.’

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Amy Fox of Thames Valley Police previously said: ‘Our deepest sympathies are with the child’s family, friends and all who knew and loved her.

‘This is an unimaginable tragedy, and we are doing everything we can to support those affected.

‘This remains a highly sensitive and complex investigation.

‘I want to sincerely thank the community for their understanding and patience as we work to uncover the full circumstances.’

This is a breaking story – more to follow.
