Moment bus driver shoves pensioner, 77, off bus as he breaks shoulder

A bus driver shoved a 77-year-old pensioner off of his vehicle causing him to fall and break his shoulder.

Video footage captured the moment Kyle Howles, 31, grabbed the elderly man by his jacket with both hands before shoving him from the bus so violently he slammed into the pavement.

The two got into a verbal spat before violence erupted, reportedly following a previous incident the driver had with a cyclist.

Video from the bus cab shows the older man and Howles talking heatedly and pointing at one another before the pensioner appeared to reach inside and pull open the door separating the driver from passengers.

Howles then stood up, grabbed the man’s jacket with both hands and pulled the pensioner towards him before shoving him backwards.

The force of the push meant his victim fell out of the bus and landed on his side on the pavement.

The pensioner was treated at the scene by emergency services and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Howles appeared in Aberdeen Sheriff Court on 11 November where he pleaded ‘guilty under provocation’ to one count of assault.

Howles’ defence argued the victim had threatened him by saying ‘what he would do to him if he were 20 years younger’, the Press and Journal reported.

He received a fine of £320, which included a £20 victim surcharge.

A spokesperson for First Bus said: ‘The video footage of this incident is truly shocking, and we’d like to extend our apologies to the passenger involved.

‘It goes without saying that this sort of behaviour from one of our drivers is completely unacceptable, and we can confirm that he was dismissed shortly after the incident following a full investigation.

‘We also fully cooperated with the police during their enquiries.’
