Today marks the end of my transitional wardrobe. A glance at the forecast (or indeed out the window) tells me it’s time to dress for actual winter. My suede jacket just isn’t going to cut it in the upcoming onslaught of rain, bitter wind and sleet.
Luckily, the autumn/winter catwalks gave us plenty of fresh ideas and, remarkably, many of them are extremely wearable.
The best news is that you don’t need much to build a capsule cold-weather wardrobe that feels both current and effortless.
From great jeans to thick winter coats and retro trainers, I’ve trawled the high street to find six trend-led pieces that will keep you stylish and warm this winter and for many winters to come.
Chocolate coat

If you’re in the market for a new winter coat, bypass predictable black and go for this season’s hottest shade: brown. Whether you choose camel or cocoa, this hue has quietly taken over the high street. Update your coat to a rich chocolate tone and your whole wardrobe will instantly feel more current. Plus, expect a shower of compliments – it’s far more flattering than black.

We’ve all got a cupboard full of basic, one-colour knits, but if you want to update your wardrobe this winter, it’s time to add some personality. Look for prints – Fair Isle and argyle especially – and don’t shy away from colour. If money were no object, you’d be making a beeline for Miu Miu, but thankfully the high street has us covered.

Denim should be top of your list if you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe. To prove you’ve got your finger firmly on the fashion pulse, invest in indigo. Deep blue, raw denim dominated the runways at Chanel, Prada, and Isabel Marant – and it’s filtered straight through to the high street. Go for a loose fit with a turn-up for an effortlessly cool look. I had to include a fabulous pair from Essentiel Antwerp, too, even though they’re not navy – the pearl detail will take you seamlessly into the party season.
Colourful trainers
We all have a practical pair of everyday trainers, but do you have a fashion pair, too? That’s what we’re talking about here – a box-fresh style that makes even your most dressed-down outfit look instantly cooler. The Dries Van Noten aesthetic is your cue: think slimline shapes in fun colours or designs with a gum sole. Check out these eye-catching pairs that will elevate any outfit in an instant.
Soft, slouchy bags
Forget stiff and structured, this winter’s most desirable bags are soft, slouchy and big enough to stash your winter layers in – bonus! Think buttery leather or soft suede, and large styles that can be thrown over your shoulder or tucked under your arm with ease – they look and feel relaxed, chic and expensive (but don’t necessarily come with a big price tag).
Statement accessories
Accessories are where you can really have fun this winter. A bold, bright silk scarf; a chunky knitted snood; or some striped cashmere wrist warmers (these are Claudia Winkleman’s favourite) will add a personal touch – and a little fashion flare – to your everyday outfits. Don’t be afraid to mix textures – silks with wool and wool with leather. The key is to choose one piece that makes a statement and wear it with confidence.
And one thing to avoid this winter…
Yes, Chloe, Prada and Fendi all pushed faux fur this season, but it simply doesn’t work in real life. What looks elegant and dramatic on a runway ends up looking like roadkill in the outside world. My advice? Avoid it altogether.
