Liverpool star breaks silence on his future

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has admitted he is ‘relaxed’ about his contract situation at the club, despite being in the final year of his current deal.

Robertson, 31, has entered his final season at Anfield and is yet to be offered new terms by the Premier League champions.

The Reds vice-captain was linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in the summer, which he has revealed made his summer ‘stressful’.

However, he remained on Merseyside despite the £40million signing of Milos Kerkez, and is content with whatever happens next.

‘Whatever happens will happen behind closed doors and I’m relaxed about the whole situation,’ said Robertson. ‘If it is my last year, then it’s my last year. If it’s not, then so be it.

‘But I think obviously I had a bit of a stressful summer in terms of decisions and things like that.’

Andy Robertson is in the final year of his current contract at Liverpool but is feeling 'relaxed'

The Reds vice-captain is currently in a battle with Milos Kerkez for the left-back starting spot

The left-back was demoted to a back-up role at the start of the season when Kerkez came through the door, failing to start any of the Premier League champions’ first nine games in the top flight.

But the Hungarian youngster, who is 10 years Robertson’s junior, has had a difficult start to life at Anfield and has been dropped for the Scotsman in each of the last four games in all competitions.

Robertson added: ‘I’ve said to myself to just try and enjoy the next few months and then obviously it will start probably taking over my life. I’ve got no doubt about that. That’s what happens when you go into your last six months. I’m just trying to focus on football now.

‘Delighted to be back on the pitch, delighted to be back playing the last few games. That’s important and let’s see what happens. But I’m relaxed about the whole thing and the club has been amazing for me.’

Contract has been a buzzword on the red half of Merseyside the past two seasons after the saga of trio Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, threatened to derail their title-winning campaign in Arne Slot’s first season in charge.

Captain Van Dijk and Salah eventually signed on for a further two years as they won their second Premier League title alongside Robertson, but Alexander-Arnold ended his 20-year affiliation with the club to leave for Real Madrid.

Ibrahima Konate and Robertson are now the two names on everyone’s lips when it comes to contracts, with the Frenchman also in the final year of his deal, but the full-back doesn’t want talk to take over the campaign like it did last season.

‘I think last season everyone was bored of talking about the three lads, but for me the relationship between me and the club has been a wonderful one,’ he continued.

Ibrahima Konate is another Liverpool star whose current deal expires at the end of the season

‘They’ve done everything for me in terms of me and my family. I think I’ve not been too bad for them in terms of signing from Hull for £8m and what I’ve done.’

Robertson signed for the club in 2017 and has gone on to win two league titles, a Champions League, two League Cups, an FA Cup, and a Club World Cup.

He has also featured over 350 times during his eight years at the club, and was only appointed vice-captain after the departure of Alexander-Arnold in the summer.
