Man United star could extend deal if he takes big cut in wages

Manchester United are considering extending midfielder Casemiro’s contract beyond this season, but only if he takes a cut in wages.

The Old Trafford club are keen to keep reducing their wage bill following the departures of a string of high earners – and although Casemiro is on a massive £375,000-a-week deal, they see the Brazilian as a player who can add value beyond next summer.

United have an option to extend his contract by 12 months until June 2027, with Casemiro having become a key player for under-fire manager Ruben Amorim.

United are planning a rebuild their midfield next summer with at least one major signing expected. Kobbie Mainoo’s future remains uncertain and Manuel Ugarte has yet to find his feet, meaning Casemiro is still needed.

Casemiro was in action for Brazil over the international break, alongside United team-mate Mathues Cunha, with the pair involved in a 5-0 victory over South Korea before an extraordinary 3-2 defeat by Japan on Tuesday.

Casemiro played 90 minutes in both games, putting in doubt his chances of starting against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Brazilian has been in good form for United this season, despite a red card against Chelsea

Since joining from Real Madrid in 2022, the midfielder has made 83 Premier League appearances and chipped in with seven goals.

After a trophy-laden stint at the Bernabeu, which saw him lift the Champions League five times and win three La Liga crowns, he has added the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to his glittering CV with the Reds.

He started four of United’s first five Premier League games this season but was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half in the win over Chelsea.

After missing the defeat at Brentford through suspension, he was named back in Ruben Amorim’s starting XI for the win over Sunderland before the international break and played 85 minutes.
